Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Septic Flesh – Mystic Places Of Dawn (Season Of Mist)

Where the hell to start with this one then? Well it is a lot different than anything heard since the band were reborn and got back together as  Septicflesh, in fact it feels completely wrong calling them that for this… Continue Reading →

Vanhelga – Host (Art Of Propaganda)

It’s a brand new year as I sit down to write this review, a new start, a new dawn, the sun is beaming through the window. Life, is it not something to love, to embrace, to cherish? Fuck that load… Continue Reading →

Koldbrann – Vertigo (Season of Mist)

The 2003 debut from these Norwegians, ‘Nekrotisk Inkvisition’, was a unique album in the black metal genre. Oozing tangible darkness and boasting one of the weirdest (and coolest) snare sounds imaginable, the name Koldbrann imprinted itself upon my mind from… Continue Reading →

Kromosom – Live Forever (Southern Lord)

I immediately read the description of this and assumed that the band were from Sweden or possibly Finland where crust is undeniably king but then we have all been guilty of overlooking Australia at times, probably due to it being… Continue Reading →

Albums Of The Year 2012

It has been a busy year with seemingly more and more music being delivered, so much in fact it has been impossible to keep up with everything. The biggest problem is whittling it all down to just ten releases that… Continue Reading →

Interview – Stream Of Passion

I rather fell head over heels with Stream Of Passion on very first hearing of their debut 2005 album Embrace The Storm. At the time the band were being championed by Arjen Lucassen who was also playing guitar with them… Continue Reading →

Epica & Stream Of Passion – London Electric Ballroom 19/12/12

Deceased – Supernatural Addiction (Hells Headbangers)

I have to admit that Deceased had already been around for 12 years before I heard them properly on the release of their third 1997 album Fearless Undead Machines,’ the tape copy of which is now well played. I probably… Continue Reading →

Interview – Dordeduh

Dordeduh are a relatively new band but the players within its ranks certainly are not. Following a split down the middle with Hupogrammos and Sol Faur somewhat unceremoniously leaving Negura Bunget this new division from Romania were formed. With both… Continue Reading →

Darkthrone – Hate Them (Peaceville)

As we celebrate the news that Darkthrone are poised to release album number 15 ‘The Underground Resistance’ in February 2013 it is time to once more dip into their back catalogue which has been exhaustively reissued by label Peaceville. ‘Hate… Continue Reading →

Endezzma – Erotik Nekrosis (Agonia)

So what gets your goat the most? Is it po-faced black metal bands who serve their Lord Master Satan with true dedication and are adherents of the much revered left hand path of never mentioned shubanagadingdong cult, or those who… Continue Reading →

Virus, Vulture Industries, Krakow & Mondvolland – London Underworld 11/12/12

Scroll to bottom of feature for tripped out photo gallery.  There’s a silly amount of things on this time of year and simply not having funds or energy to go to much means picking and choosing very carefully. I had… Continue Reading →
