Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Aura Noir – Dreams Like Deserts (Peaceville)

It must be that time of year I have four reissues that I’m currently reviewing and all are albums that have to some point either been missing in my life or are boosted with tracks that have not seen the… Continue Reading →

Neokhrome – Perihelion (SR)

Well I guessed that Perihelion had something to do with astronomy and indeed it is the point that a planet or asteroid is nearest to the sun. The cover of the album here kind of gives that one away too…. Continue Reading →

New Model Army – Vengeance The Whole Story 1980-84 (Attack Attack)

This should have been out some time ago after the band managed to get the rights back for the material from EMI, that record label that only youthful bastards signed them away to. Unfortunately NMA were having their own annus… Continue Reading →

Blitzkrieg Baby – Porcus Norvegicus (Neuropa)

We all like to be scared don’t we? It releases endorphins and gives an adrenaline rush that is quite like no other. Films and books are a good way of getting the fear although as you get older it is… Continue Reading →

Alien Sex Fiend – London Dome 1/12/12

30 years of The Fiend, wow doesn’t time fly, like a bat! I have loved this band for a very long time myself and had been looking forward to this somewhat rare performance from the Fiend, one that was going… Continue Reading →

Hocico – El Último Minuto (Out Of Line)

You can forget all about Tex-Mex, welcome to Tech Mex. Sorry could not resist that but it is a good enough intro to describe this veritable feast of beats from an album whose full unwieldy title is El Último Minuto (Antes… Continue Reading →

Anaal Nathrakh, Code & Winterfylleth – London Electrowerkz 30/11/12

Even at 7pm there was a healthy crowd loitering in the unsalubrious alleyway by this decrepit old venue. It seemed like people were out early and wanted to make sure they saw all three bands. It could not have been… Continue Reading →

Victorians – Aristocrats’ Symphony (SR)

Welcome to the V-Lodge. Founded over 100 years ago in Victorian times, this was a place all about decadence when visual beauty was an aesthetic that had to be followed by anyone with serious notions about joining the aristocracy, well… Continue Reading →

Lord Of The Grave – Green Vapour (Church Within)

What’s the best part of raping a zombie? Hearing the hip bone go crack! Actually can you rape a zombie? Can they actually say nooooooouuughhh? What am I talking about? Well first of these five numbers is called Raping Zombies… Continue Reading →

Snailking- Samsara (ConSouling Sounds)

A mysterious and unassuming CD arrives in the depths of Ave Noctum, very neatly packaged in a lovely sleeve and all the way from Sweden. So what can it be? Um, well, they are seemingly named after a Ufomamaut album… Continue Reading →

Huldre – Intet Menneskebarn (Gateway Music)

Huldre – Intet Menneskebarn (Gateway Music)  The first thing that really caught my attention on this was the bands rather spiffing logo, thankfully it is readable but the clever thing about it is the way it is constructed from branches… Continue Reading →

Okkultokrati – Snakereigns (Fysisk Format)

Although debut 2010 album ‘No Light For Mass’ from these Norwegians barely made any mark that I heard of there has been a real buzz about their follow up Snakereigns. I keep hearing mentions of black metal and punk being… Continue Reading →
