Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Unspoken – Requiem Aeternam Deo (Deathrune Records)

We shalt not speak of Unspoken!  Well actually I guess we best otherwise this would be a pretty crap review wouldn’t it? This is the second full length from this Oslo based band and my first encounter with them. Reading… Continue Reading →

John 3:16 – Visions Of The Hereafter (Alrealon Music)

With the album name subtitled as ‘Visions Of Heaven Hell And Purgatory’ this is one of those pieces of music with a lot to dig beneath as far as the concept is concerned. It is kind of at odds with… Continue Reading →

Forget various other bands sporting this name, it is time to pop over to West Yorkshire for the only real Prophecy that means a damn in the world we dwell as far as I am concerned. There is something maybe… Continue Reading →

Secret Signs – For A Lifetime (Casket)

Apparently this Spanish symphonic and operatic band formed in Spain in 2005 and recorded just one song which got immediate airplay and inspired the band to write more. I would kind of like to go and find whoever played the… Continue Reading →

Django Prepare A Coffin – Ferdinando Baldi (Arrow)

First there was a man with no name but a man needs a name if he is to be a hero, especially in the lawless world of the Western. So, in 1966 that name was first given and Django was… Continue Reading →

The Howling Void – The Womb Beyond The World (Solitude)

Ooh this sounds good, thought I as giving it a spin. It also sounded slightly familiar too and I tried to place it all in the grand scheme of things. Luckily a quick glance at the ever useful Metal Archives… Continue Reading →

Yayla – Nihiahayat (Merdumgiriz)

Yes indeed looking at those random meaningless words you are hardly expected to have a clue what this is all about. What we have though is a one man black metal project helmed by Emil Togrul from Turkey, whom we… Continue Reading →

Denouncement Pyre – Almighty Arcanum (Hells Headbangers)

This Melbourne based lot have been around since 2004 and have released a fair few demos, splits, EP’s and an album ‘World Cremation’ in 2010, prior to this. I have to admit that they had pretty much escaped me until… Continue Reading →

One of those couple of yearly, very well wrapped packages of discs from Russia courtesy of Solitude Productions turned up and I wondered if it was going to contain anything new from the mighty Raventale, surely it was about time,… Continue Reading →

Voivod – Target Earth (Century Media)

Just as I sit down to write this review a message pops up on Facebook informing that it is Voivod’s 30th birthday today! Exactly how accurate this is I am uncertain of but it gives me the perfect introduction for… Continue Reading →

The Great Old Ones, Terzij De Horde & Oblivionized – London Unicorn 5/1/13

What twatwaffle was it that said the bands were starting an hour and a half before they did on the event page? Hmmm well it is a free gig for all so it just meant having a few brews to… Continue Reading →
