Even Flow is a progressive metal band of some pedigree, having been formed in the late 1990s, with a couple of albums and other material to their name and an extensive touring history, plus collaborations with members of Fates Warning, Symphony X and Dream Theater amongst others. “Mediterraneo” is a 23 minute ep.

The first thing that is evident is that Even Flow know how to work a song. “Ocean Lies” is a mini-encyclopedia of progressive metal with a power metal twist. It has the qualities you expect from a progressive metal – flamboyance and energy. The song has life and character. It is straight out of the book of the band mentioned above. “Ray of Light” starts as a ballad but expands into power mode before cascading down in a typical progressive style. It’s not hugely original but it is joyous and expansive, ending with a keyboard flurry. “Leaves” is the sort of prog song with a message, as the talented vocalist gives rein to his vocal range in telling his story in exaggerated and typically prog way. The highlight of this song was the cascading and impactful piano work. So too “Revelation Day” is word-heavy but refreshingly it cranks up and develops into a dramatic progressive power piece. The structures are sophisticated but Even Flow don’t overwhelm us with complication. The songs are fresh and catchy with progressive touches. The title song closes the work. It has an intriguing eastern opening, which didn’t seem to serve much purpose other than as a foil to another intriguing passage before the world turns prog. It’s a mysterious song with its prog chorus, darker touches, a symphonic moment, keyboard passages and a power romp. It’s certainly an ambitious track from a band with confidence but I found it like a series of snapshots.

The musicianship and the vocals on “Mediterraneo” are admirable. It is abundant with life and energy, played in a familiar style. I preferred some moments to others, and on the subject of the title song it didn’t hang together for me unlike the rest of the work, but overall I enjoyed it.
