This is a solo project of Kyle McNeil, the frontman of UK heavy metal band Seven Sisters. Here, McNeil is exploring his love for prog. Undoubtedly, many elements will be familiar to many Seven Sisters fans. These include infectious vocal tone and delivery and the charismatic melody that comes from the guitar work. I might also add, the imagery/artwork is quite spectacular. The pre orders for the first batch of CD’s have already sold out, but there is a second press in the making. The release is also available on cassette with other merchandise options.

‘Dawn of Mind’ would not figure out of place as part of the day job band. When we get to ‘Seven Sided Mirror’, the pure class comes out. There is a remarkable hook in the melody, the chorus, the whole arrangement. Then starts the prog. Influence, that is in the instruments are used and the way they have been delivered. I am not a massive prog. aficionado so I’d rather not quote any influences! The Rory Gallagher cover of ‘Moonchild’ is close and very cool compared to the original.

‘Black Spire Curse’ is a proper prog romp, instrumentally based with some haunting guitar parts around the two-minute mark. The sound is crisp, clear and soulful. ‘Up the Tower’ has a retro metal influence, I’m looking to Sweden for recent comparison with the infectious twists of McNeils vocals. ‘Blood Becomes Sand’ is an “epic” song. At over 7 minutes, the acoustic start warms you up, and then develops, I find this like some of the early Uriah Heep material. The gathering of pace towards the end of the track feels and sounds great, of course, the associated lead guitar parts make this ever redeemable.

Overall, this is a great soundtrack to the summer months, the happiness you can gain from this release is pleasing in what some would consider these strange times. Kyle has a clear inspirational vision for his music, the package overall is of a particularly high standard and it will stand alongside the day job band comfortably. This may also open up the doors to a new wave of fans also.
