War Possession were created in 2008 by members of Embrace of Thorns and Wargoat, along with Merciless Crucifixion’s singer, Vaggelis P. They have already released a demo called, simply, ”War”. ”Through The Ages” came out this year, which is their first official release.

The debut album of these Greek Death Metallers was a long awaited release for me. ”Through the ages” clearly explains the role and the musical path of this album. It really takes us through the ages with the way they adopted the old school sound, with crushing riffs, high bass volume and crazy growls. It channels the raw, crusty sound of Malevolent Creation and Bolt thrower whilst sounding as if it was recorded 20 years ago.

Entering the crypt of war, Greek deathsters welcome us in the Shadow of the Ancient Gods. The debut song of the album is a mix of early Bolt thrower along with stinking Autopsy doom techniques. One of the best ways for an album to begin with and get introduced to what’s coming later.

Medieval bloodlust adopts a more Bestial sound and follows a black metal path as well. It is raw, monotonous, totally old school!

The sound of the bombs heralds the beginning of World War Domination, again having me thinking; Bolt Thrower and some early Therion as well. Yes! Probably, the best song from this debut EP.

Summarizing, it is an interesting work, suggested for fans of old school Metal, a band that does not try to copy other bands, but plays what they feel instead.

There is nothing arty in the lyrics or instrumentation and there doesn’t have to be. War Possession accomplish everything possible, warming up with ‘Through The Ages’ before establishing themselves solidly on the worldwide scene.
