Rock and metal have been in my existence for about 30 years and saw me go through a rapid weaning period that covered AC/DC, Maiden, Saxon, Whitesnake, Motorhead, etc from about 1982 to 1984 before shifting to thrash in the summer of 1984. At that point my only mission was to find the fastest, most violent music on the planet resulting checking out every genre in extreme music from death metal and grindcore to crust punk and hardcore all of which I still adore today and buy albums from and go see live. During the 80s I grew up in the infamous Bradford thrash scene, a time I still dearly miss such was the inventiveness and great camaraderie it held. I’m a bit of phase metaller, going from one style to another, through sheer investigation of finding something new, but always sticking with them all. I’m a total sucker for double bass and blast beats and always will be no matter what genre it comes from. I absolutely detest people that have joined the metal scene because it is trendy or their mates like it, likewise I detest people who are shallow and think this music is a fad of growing up. Most of us are extremely well educated and articulate individuals who prefer freedom of self expression than indoctrination by mass media organisations hell bent on artistic sterilisation. Much of my cash is spent on following metal and I wouldn’t change a thing about it because it is the best music scene in the world.

Age Of Woe – Envenom (Lifeforce Records)

This is a third album by this death metal outfit comprising members that hail from Sweden, Germany and Finland, for a release teeming with creativity. After a quiet intro section on opener ‘Inferno’ the album utilises a fine fade-in technique… Continue Reading →

Cancerfaust – Let The Earth Tremble (Godz Ov War)

Sometimes you to just have to sit back and submerge yourself in an album, just let it flood over you no matter what genre it comes from, which is what I did with this Polish band’s debut full length that… Continue Reading →

Yoth Iria – As The Flame Withers (Pagan Records)

The band name of this Greek act may be unfamiliar to you but the duo within its ranks are certainly not, comprising Jim Mutilator (ex-Rotting Christ up to 1996) and The Magus (Necromantia and also ex-Rotting Christ). Both are legendary… Continue Reading →

Therion – Leviathan (Nuclear Blast Records)

I am very pleased that the wait for this new 17th album by Therion has been only three years as opposed to six between 2012’s ‘Les Fleurs Du Mal’ and ‘Beloved Antichrist’ in 2018. ‘Beloved Antichrist’ coalesced everything about Therion… Continue Reading →

Stass – Songs Of Flesh And Decay (Emanzipation Productions)

Mr Rogga Johansson, and his grisly cohort, kicks off his account for 2021 with the second album under the Stass moniker that once again sees him collaborating with Felix Stass (vocals) of Germany’s Crematory, incorporating his considerable vocal dexterity alongside… Continue Reading →

Infected Humans – Unexpected Traumatic Experiences (Gore House Productions)

Was there ever a more appropriately named band given the rampaging pandemic that is sweeping across the planet. As prophetic as the band is I’m sure this Ecuadorian trio didn’t envisage how apt their band moniker would actually be as… Continue Reading →

Frozen Soul – Crypt Of Ice (Century Media Records)

There is absolutely no doubt which band inspires this old school death metal outfit and that’s Bolt Thrower. Every song reeks of that warring onslaught we all loved about those UK deathsters. Having formed in 2018 the band has released… Continue Reading →

There are plenty of Polish grind acts to sink your teeth into as each has that punishing authentic grind sound such as Squash Bowels, Straight Hate, Suffering Mind and Antigama to name a handful you should check out if grind… Continue Reading →

Nihilrage – Eternal (Blood Fire Death)

Spanish death metal tends to be the grimier grisly variety which of course I particularly like as this very new band, established in 2018, releases their first EP setting the bar for their next release very high indeed. The serene… Continue Reading →
