Your No. 1 Source For Extreme And Atmospheric Music And Film.

Author Andy Pountney

I was brought up in the West Midlands during the back end of the thrash scene, and then relocated to Yorkshire, becoming immersed in the bludgeoning death metal scene. As death metal waned, I found my true musical calling in the form of black metal, and it is here that my musical passion remains to this day. Having said that, I’m open minded and will give a fair listen to any style of alternative music, especially live, enjoying all forms of extreme music and can regularly be found lurking with a camera in one hand and pint in the other at metal gigs……

Skarlett Riot, Liberty Lies, Air Drawn Dagger – Sheffield Corporation 21/11/21

Okay, so Skarlett Riot might not be standard Ave Noctum fare, but we all need our guilty pleasures and to be honest, Skarlett Riot are one that we shouldn’t feel embarrassed about. Having been working hard since 2010, they have… Continue Reading →

Gaahls Wyrd – The Humming Mountain (Season of Mist)

In the world of extreme music, there are few people as infamous or notorious as Kristian Eivind Espedal, aka Gaahl. He is perhaps best known for his time with Norwegian Black Metal outfit Gorgoroth, but he has also served time… Continue Reading →

Majesty Of Silence – Die Schöpfung Tohuwabohu (Boersma)

Wow, where do I begin?! To say this is a complex album is a huge understatement but I mean that in a positive way as I thoroughly enjoyed getting to grips with the fifth full length from this Swiss extreme… Continue Reading →

Winterfylleth, Dread Sovereign and Deus Mori – Manchester Rebellion 18/10/21

A week of gigs culminated in my first trip back to Manchester’s Rebellion for this unmissable line up. If I recall correctly, this gig was originally planned to be with Alda and Panopticon, and when they had to cancel (for… Continue Reading →

Alda – A Distant Fire (Eisenwald)

If I remember rightly, Alda were meant to be in the UK at the moment, touring with Panopticon and Winterfylleth. That mouthwatering line up was set to be one of the gigs of the year, not least because it would… Continue Reading →

Solacide – Fall From Eternity (Saturnal Records)

Some things in life can be relied upon, and the Finnish Black Metal scene is one of them, spawning a seemingly endless supply of bands ready to scorch the world with their nasty, vitriolic outpourings. Solacide are one such band,… Continue Reading →

Osi And The Jupiter – Stave (Eisenwald)

I’m sure most of us reading Ave Noctum spend a lot of our time listening to some of the most brutal and extreme music out there, but if we are honest, we will also listen to something a little different… Continue Reading →

Unreqvited – Beautiful Ghosts (Prophecy Productions)

It only seems five minutes ago that I was reviewing Unreqvited’s last album ‘Mosaic II: la déteste et la détresse’ and the wonderful split with Sylvaine that was released at the same time, but here we are with another top-notch… Continue Reading →

Grabak – Scion (Talheim Records)

Grábakr, from which the name Grabak is derived, refers to one of the serpents who resides within the roots of Yggdrasil from the Poetic Edda and Nordic mythology. With a name like this, you might think that the band are… Continue Reading →

Karcinoma – Invictus (Wroth Emitter)

The Russian metal scene is always interesting, but I tend to associate it mostly with brutal death metal, and it is these death/black metal elements that I remember most clearly about Karcinoma’s 1998 debut ‘The Night… Apogee of Madness’ although… Continue Reading →

Friisk – …Un Torügg Bleev Blot Sand (Vendetta Records)

I thought I was pretty clued up when it came to black metal, especially atmospheric black metal, but I have to hang my head in shame and admit Friisk were a new proposition to me even though they have an… Continue Reading →

Felled – The Intimate Earth (Transcending Obscurity Records)

Despite having been around for a few years, this is Felled’s first full-length release and my first encounter with them. However, the press info was full of superlatives and hyperbole drawing me in enough to make me put my hand… Continue Reading →
