Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Inferno – Gnosis Kardias (Of Transcension and Involution) (W.T.C. Productions)

This album has one of those titles that I look at and think “load of old cobblers.” I mean some bands do really pile on the mystical pseudo claptrap don’t they? I want to be able to listen to music… Continue Reading →

Primordial, Fen & Crom Dubh – London Underworld 31/3/17

It seems like every band under the sun is playing at the moment. Scotland looks to be the place to be this weekend with not 1 but 2 stellar one day festivals on and indeed the hardiest at this show… Continue Reading →

None – S/T (Hypnotic Dirge)

It’s probably not surprising that there is little in the way of information available about a band called None. They don’t pop up in the normal places you would try and gather facts about everything from band members to releases,… Continue Reading →

Krysthla – Peace In Our Time (Initiate Audio)

The debut album by this Wellingborough based mob ‘A War Of Souls And Desires’ was a vicious S.O.B. make no mistake. Similarly when they tore things up at Bloodstock Festival in the Sophie Tent getting a pit full of ugly… Continue Reading →

Mayhem, Dragged Into Sunlight & Inconcessus Lux Lucis – London Electric Ballroom 29/3/17

There’s lots of black clad figures stomping around Camden, some sporting corpse-paint and frightening the tourists and foreign students. All are congregating for a show of legendary proportions and it’s not Enuff Z’Nuff round the corner at the Underworld. First… Continue Reading →

Endezzma – The Arcane Abyss (Pulverised)

Pure Norwegian devil worship here! Endezzma was borne to rotten life by Trondr Nefas of Urgehal (R.I.P) along with Morten Shax. There’s been line-up changes aplenty but somehow the band have managed to soldier on and principally includes live members… Continue Reading →

Asphyx, Decrepid & NahemiA – London Underworld 25/3/17

There are no shortage of extreme Polish bands that have washed up on our shores and tonight’s proceedings kick off with one NahemiA now based in London. They may well be a black metal band on an otherwise death metal… Continue Reading →

Medico Peste – Herzogian Darkness (W.T.C. Productions)

This form of pestilential darkness comes to us via Poland and a calibre of musicians who have been involved past and present, on and off stage with the likes of Old Woods Grave, Mgla, Clandestine Blaze and Mord A’Stigmata. Speaking… Continue Reading →

The Void – Jamie Gillespie & Steven Kostanski (Signature Entertainment)

Although there’s no shortage of modern day horror films and the genre is fairly healthy I am sure many of us who lived through the golden era (the 80’s for me) find themselves a bit jaded with all the remakes… Continue Reading →

Doedsvangr – Satan Ov Suns (Immortal Frost Productions)

Tread carefully for we are about to enter the fields of death! Doedsvangr may well be a new name to us but the unholy triumvirate behind this cult are not. Lead singer of Nordjevel and Svartelder Doedadmiral, has collaborated with… Continue Reading →

Seoul Station – Yeon Sang-ho (Studio Canal)

By now any self-respecting zombie fanatic, survivalist anticipating the zombie apocalypse, will have jumped aboard the Train To Busan and noted that South Korea probably ain’t the best place to be visiting when the dead start to rise. If you… Continue Reading →
