Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Zeal & Ardor, Pryapisme & Combineharvester – London Underworld 20/4/17

I’ll say something about this show, it would have sold out a lot quicker than a few hours before doors if Roadburn was not on. Zeal And Ardor’s excellent ‘Devil Is Fine’ album has caused a huge buzz among those… Continue Reading →

Alfahanne – Det Nya Svarta (Indie)

Back around January 2014 Swedish reprobates Alfahanne really burst on the scene with debut album Alfapokalypse. It was a breath of rotten air bolstered by an urgent clamouring punked up backbone that took in various different ideas throughout its short,… Continue Reading →

Elsa Fraulein SS – Patrice Rhomm (Maison Rouge)

More disreputable sleaze from the Eurociné stable here and it’s obvious that Screenbound Entertainment who have been releasing these films under the Maison Rouge and Black House imprint scored a veritable job lot. The French production company was responsible for… Continue Reading →

Mourning Dawn – Waste (Aesthetic Death)

Last Easter Sunday involved a rare opportunity to see French band Mourning Dawn live at Doom Over London. This one and here I sit writing about their new EP. Pure coincidence that this is, I can’t help getting slightly spooked… Continue Reading →

Örth – Nocturno Inferno (Satanic Art Media)

1996 was a vintage year for black metal releases. Heaven Shall Burn.., Antichrist, Stormblast, Filosofem, Nemesis Divina, Aspera Hiems Symfonia. I could go on just as easily as I could fill in the band names to go with these classics… Continue Reading →

Beast Modulus – Being (S/R)

I had absolutely no idea what this was going to sound like until I decided to just throw it in the player and find out. Apparently although now based in Brooklyn, Beast Modulus started out in New Orleans as a… Continue Reading →

Crimson – Juan Fortuny (Black House)

I’m not sure why but I always thought of this film as being helmed under the directorship of Paul Naschy and it’s not really surprising due to his prolific stamp over Spanish cinema as both actor and director and indeed… Continue Reading →

King Dude, Sol Invictus, Of The Wand And Moon – London Underworld 11/4/17

I had been looking forward to this one having never seen King Dude and loving his albums. Excellent supports made this a huge draw too and it was nice to actually go to a mellow show for a change and… Continue Reading →

Obitus – Slaves Of The Vast Machine (Hypnotic Dirge)

In formative years all we heard was radio gaga, short songs designed for unchallenging airplay. Of course there was classical music and opera which lasted for several centuries but that was for fossils not for young kids with whole lives… Continue Reading →

Taake, Winterfylleth & De Profundis – London Dome 7/4/17

The madness never stops. England seems to have never had it quite so good with shows at the moment. Leeds looks like the place to really be at the weekend with Ritual Fest happening but there’s stacks of bands in… Continue Reading →

Extremity – Extremely Fucking Dead (20 Buck Spin)

Yeah I took one look at band name and title and thought bunch of bloody kids trying to be controversial with rude words and all that. Not the case at all though, you wouldn’t get a starry eyed bunch of… Continue Reading →

Barst – The Western Lands (Consouling Sounds)

Experimental and expansive Barst are one of many Belgium artists that refuse to be pigeonholed taking on a huge range of styles in this sprawling two track musical odyssey inspired by William S Burroughs The Western Lands. Ideally I had… Continue Reading →
