Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Funeral Chasm – Omniversal Existence (Aesthetic Death)

This Danish duo consist of Sjaelepest (guitars) and Danny Woe (everything else). They are both in Pagan black group Above Ravens and Danny has played, past and present with such artists as Woebegone Obscured, Altar Of Oblivion and Rimfrost. This… Continue Reading →

Suffer Yourself – Rip Tide (Aesthetic Death)

You suffer, I suffer, we all suffer. With a name like this one could expect Suffer Yourself to play grindcore but the track lengths and label suggest something quite different. This Swedish / Ukranian act are new to me and… Continue Reading →

Lantlos – Wildhund (Prophecy)

This German act caught the attention of many with their second album .neon due to the fact that Alcest singer Neige joined them and they forged a not dissimilar path with their post black flavoured output. However, one had a… Continue Reading →

Lekamen Illusionen Kallet – Avgrundspoetens Flamma (Moribund)

Yep, it’s a bit of a mouthful and no surprise this project is shortened to the more immediate name of LIK. Although they are Swedish, they should not be confused with the death metal band of the same name. I… Continue Reading →

Luz: The Flower Of Evil – Juan Diego Escobar Alzate (Fractured Visions)

Prepare to be transported to another world, one portrayed by a feast of visual imagery. We are in a verdant and lush paradise in the Colombian mountains. There are forested regions and stunning dioramas including a magnificent waterfall flowing into… Continue Reading →

Prieuré – La Foi Des Bourreaux (Vetus Capra)

I certainly feel honoured receiving a CD that is limited to just 50 copies here to review from the man without a face Sans Visage who is responsible for it. This is an obscure and underground one-man black metal project… Continue Reading →

Kryptan – S/T (Debemur Morti)

A new band from Sweden, a name you may have not heard of (yet) and a debut EP. You might be shrugging your shoulders and thinking “so what.” However, those behind this trio are far from new to the scene…. Continue Reading →

Thy Light – S/T (Talheim Records)

Isolation, solitude, nostalgia and poeticism all meet headlong here over two lengthy tracks. Paolo Bruni is the person behind all artistic expressions on this release. He comes from Brazil and now resides in Scotland. This is possibly not the reason… Continue Reading →

Impur, Sadistic Demise, Unidentified Corpse – Three Ways Of Death Metal (Wroth Emitter)

Recently resurrected Russian label Wroth Emitter were created under the name Wroth Prod back in 1993 and have come back from the dead. Fittingly it is death that we look at here with three bands dishing up differing varieties on… Continue Reading →

The Joy Thieves – American Parasite (Armalyte)

Been expectantly awaiting this, finally after three highly rated EP’s The Joy Thieves get round to their debut album. Since forming or should that be spawning into the multi-limbed industro-wrecking machine they are, this lot have certainly kept us on… Continue Reading →

Xasthur – Victims Of The Times (Lupus Lounge / Prophecy)

Now here’s a name we have not heard in a while but things are very different from when we last did. It’s not surprising for artists to take a change of direction musically. Many do so as an aside to… Continue Reading →
