Your No. 1 Source For Extreme And Atmospheric Music And Film.

Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Frozen Ocean – Vanviddsanger (Obscure Abhorrence Productions)

It’s always nice to get post from Russia even if in this case the package needed serious de-thawing in a warm cupboard overnight before I could get under the ice and frost and open it. This time there were two… Continue Reading →

Knightriders – George A Romero (Arrow)

Cutting straight to the chase, Knighriders is a gem of a film and a wonderful movie that finally deserves its DVD UK and worldwide Blu-ray release courtesy of Arrow. Directed by George A Romero in 1981 it followed on from… Continue Reading →

E-Musikgruppe Lux Ohr – Kometenbahn (Svart)

Well even with a basic grasp of German you should know what an Autobahn is and with Kometbahn it’s not difficult to guess we are heading to space along with the comet’s path. Then there is the name of the… Continue Reading →

Ghost, Gojira, The Defiled & Feed The Rhino – London Brixton Academy 24/3/13

Scroll down to bottom for pictures. It was hardly surprising that the Academy was busy with a huge queue snaking around it this evening. Tickets were just a mere £5 which is not something that happens here often. The night… Continue Reading →

Echtra – Sky Burial (Temple Of Torturous)

Sky Burial is the first of three proposed albums from Echtra which are going to make up the projects ‘Passage Cycle’ and explore the “dissolution of the mortal coil.” I guess if you have ever had the misfortune to sit… Continue Reading →

Enslaved, Winterfylleth & Ancient Ascendant – London Underworld 21/3/13

So a lovely sold out show at the Underworld meant it was going to prove fun doing normal things like seeing the bands, getting to the bar and loo and as for taking photos. … Luckily this was a very… Continue Reading →

Lithotome – ST (Fall Of Nature)

Me and my big mouth. On reviewing the recent 4 way USBM split New World Black Metal I accused the Krieg track of being a bit on the melodic side. If I had known that main-man Imperial was at the… Continue Reading →

Pensees Nocturnes – Nom d’Une Pipe (Ladlo Productions)

I love an album that literally takes you on a trip, one that you press play on and have no choice but to be taken on a wild journey through the deranged mind of its composer. French band Pensees Nocturnes… Continue Reading →

Killing Joke, Jayce Lewis and Hounds – London Forum 16/3/13

Checking out both the support bands before the show I decided that they certainly warranted a look and further investigation rather than spending time hemmed in with the multitudes in the local pub. It meant that Hounds who had the… Continue Reading →

Finntroll – Blodsvept (Century Media)

I have to admit I was quite surprised to realise that this is only the troll’s sixth studio album and they have not delivered anything for three years. It seems like only yesterday that we were clubbed over the head… Continue Reading →

Horna – Askel Lähempänä Saatanaa (World Terror Committee)

Everyone’s favourite filthy Finns are back with a new album, the title of which means ‘A Step Closer To Satan.’ So business as usual then! Yep pretty much and as the band formed in 1993 they are actually hitting their… Continue Reading →

Radiance – Undying Diabolyca (My Kingdom)

Well apparently as I sit down to write this it is International Women’s Day which is apt as this album is conceptually driven by the feminine figure represented by (and I am using the labels words here) “archetypes such as… Continue Reading →
