Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Altar Of Plagues – Teethed Glory And Injury (Candlelight)

I have enjoyed (if that is the right word) Irish band Altar Of Plagues since they first caught my attention, partly due to the music and also due to the mystery behind them. This is no mystery in the form… Continue Reading →

Dead End Drive-In – Brian Trenchard-Smith (Arrow)

Australia has always been one of my favourite places to check out films from. The country has some fantastic scenery to chew over and some sumptuous movies have really taken it to heart and made the most of things. Classic… Continue Reading →

Interview – Solefald

One thing that was rather a big surprise was to find out that Solefald were not only going to play their first dates since 1998 but also they were going to kick off the ‘Fire Walks With Me’ Tour alongside… Continue Reading →

Cultes Des Ghoules – Henbane (Hell’s Headbangers)

With a lively crash of thunder this Polish Culte flings open the crypt doors once again, makes a racket for an hour and creeps back home just as the sun begins to rise. This is dramatic horror fuelled black metal… Continue Reading →

Blåhø – Through Sinister Nightfall (SR)

Blåhø is not the noise one makes into a tissue when suffering a particularly bad cold but is actually the name of a mountain in the Trollheim range that this Norwegian band affiliate themselves with and apparently have members who… Continue Reading →

Vreid, Solefald & In Vain – London Barfly 4/4/13

April was being a malicious bitch and throwing snow out the sky. Luckily it did not stop a healthy crowd getting to the venue or the hardened Norsemen on the first day of this rather special 14 date tour. I… Continue Reading →

Csejthe – Reminiscence (Eisenwald)

Csejthe is the name of that infamous castle where Elizabeth Bathory worked, played and lived and if that is not enough to both give you an idea on musical style here and curdle your blood into the process, I don’t… Continue Reading →

Killing Joke – The Singles Collection 1979-2012 (Spinefarm)

1978 Notting Hill a cosmopolitan seething underbelly of life, which I remember being walked down around that time by my parents at the age of nine and seeing my first real punks. Whilst most people wanted to be a footballer… Continue Reading →

Frozen Ocean – Trollvinter (SR)

Although I write this on April 1st it is no joke and it is not the work of a fool either. With bands as varied as Finntroll to Trollfest and of course Arckanum it is a shame that none have… Continue Reading →

Black Autumn – The Advent October (Obscure Abhorrence)

Shades of grey dully greet us from the cover art of this four track EP. There is mention of Autumn and October and there is a chill air of drab despair about all this before we even get to the… Continue Reading →

The Meads Of Asphodel – Sonderkommando (Candlelight)

I was told about this album on chatting to Metatron about The Meads Of Asphodel’s last contentious album ‘The Death Of Jesus The Jew.’ As it is Easter I really should be giving this a spin but everything is concentrated… Continue Reading →

Sclavinia – Polonized (SR)

Saluting their Slavic ancestors by name I gave this a spin and immediately thought of referencing certain bands which tied in with the bands cultural identity. The cover of this sports a heraldic shield with black eagles and dragons the… Continue Reading →
