Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Interview – Conflict

If you are a regular reader of this site the chances are you like your music to be edgy and confrontational. It is not always meant to be safe, indeed sometimes it can even be downright dangerous and contentious. As… Continue Reading →

Shining, Sterbhaus, Scutum Crux, Premature Birth and Vatigal Surrd – London Electrowerkz 3/12/13

It’s an early start today and things are quick to get underway as the first of three London based support bands kick off proceedings to the small gathered throng in the grim and grimy enclaves of the Electrowerkz. There were… Continue Reading →

Calling Of Lorme – Pygmalion (SR)

Everything about this one looked a little on the strange side but we like it when that happens and we have something to decipher. The artwork hints at some sort of post-apocalyptic future, the band name is frankly odd although… Continue Reading →

Grieving Age – Merely The Fleshless We And The Awed Obsequy… (Solitude)

It’s always a great delight getting a pile of carefully wrapped discs over from Russian label Solitude Productions and their affiliated label Bad Mood Man. It’s a difficult task listening to them and thinking how much I like the sound… Continue Reading →

Frozen Ocean – Natt Over Meg (Obscure Abhorrence Productions)

I should have guessed that musicaholic Vaarwel was going to slip another release in before the year was out. He has been pretty prolific in 2013 with one other album an EP and a split with Petrychor. All have been… Continue Reading →

Pro-Pain – The Final Revolution (Steamhammer)

Oh yes it’s a flashback alright, first song here ‘Deathwish’ states that clearly and what we get on these 12 tracks are Pro-Pain at their best harking right back to the sound that defined them all those years ago on… Continue Reading →

Netra Featuring We’rewolves – Dreading Consciousness (Hypnotic Dirge)

Well this is certainly something a bit different and most welcome it is too. French artist Netra already proved to us that he was an eclectic listening experience with his 2012 album ‘Sørbyen.’ Mixing all sorts of different textures that… Continue Reading →

New Model Army – London Forum 23/11/13

I missed my annual New Model Army live fix last year as they only played a handful of dates and skipped an end of year gig in London for the first time in ages, playing just one show in Nottingham…. Continue Reading →

Profanatica – Thy Kingdom Cum (Hell’s Headbangers)

Yes it is time for more songs against praise from that diabolic duo Paul Ledney and John Gelso. Innovators within the USBM scene the group’s overtly blasphemous output is equally revered and reviled and if you have encountered it before… Continue Reading →

Ghost – If You Have Ghost (Universal)

I have just been listening to Roky Erickson, Abba, Army Of Lovers and Depeche Mode. Why on earth I would be doing that is a good question even if I do own several albums by one of the artists on… Continue Reading →

Mysticum – Lost Masters Of The Universe (Peaceville)

Our paths should certainly have crossed a lot more as Mysticum are innovators who were responsible for combing two of my favourite types of music namely black metal (of the Norwegian persuasion) and industrial. However this is the only recorded… Continue Reading →

Sorrowseed – Nemesis Engine (SR)

This band from Boston first caught my attention on sending a double album a year or so ago comprising their first two discs ‘Descent Of The Scarab Prophet’ and ‘Dread Sylvan Summonings’ which were both released in their own right… Continue Reading →
