Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Albums Of The Year 2013

So it is done, another year and another round up about what has really made its mark with the music we love in 2013. This is everyone’s most difficult task of the year and it seems that this one… Continue Reading →

The Negation – Paths Of Obedience (Mortis Humanae)

Ah French band The Negation are against ‘bleating sheep’ and the ‘weak and ignorant’ who use the likes of religion as a crux. We have that in common then and it is that annoying time of year when everyone is… Continue Reading →

Almost Human – ø (Suisa)

Not to be confused with various other ‘almost humans’ this lot are the Swiss version who simply class themselves as a metal band. Obviously there is a bit more to it than that as this nicely packaged card EP designed… Continue Reading →

Therion & Arkona – London Islington Academy 20/12/13

Due to a combination of early doors and meeting up with people, for once I completely broke my own rule of trying to make sure I covered all the support bands by walking in just as the second of them… Continue Reading →

Skapt Av Skog – ST (Fallen Temple)

It seems somewhat wrong that I hold in front of me a three track EP containing ten minutes worth of music and I have everything that has ever been or is likely to be released by a band. Apparently Norse… Continue Reading →

Naxal Protocol – The Guilty Should Get What They Deserve (Eibon)

Can’t argue with the album title but what of the band? We are told that Naxal Protocol is the new name from previously defunct power noise artists Cazzodio. You can kind of understand why after they took a break for… Continue Reading →

Carpathian Forest, The Rotted & Eastern Front – London Underworld 14/12/13

Well there were no worries about this one being empty and there was already a queue at the doors well before they opened and the few remaining tickets were quickly snapped up. For once the first support band were playing… Continue Reading →

Dismal – Giostra di Vapore (Dreamcell11)

Dismal by name but one would hope not by nature. Luckily we can cut any such cliché out of the review straight off as this Italian combo are far from that. This has been a bit of a step back… Continue Reading →

Arcturus, Fen & From The Bogs Of Aughiska – London Islington Academy 13/12/13

It’s mental out there, trying to stop and have a quiet pint in the pub before the show was an impossibility as some classy boss has treated about 50 of his braying staff to their turkey nosebags in the Moons… Continue Reading →

Watain & Coltsblood – London Electric Ballroom 8/12/13

There are plenty of black metal acts coming to town at the moment to keep us aurally terrorized but Watain are well renowned for attacking other senses too being the most stinky band on the planet. However we could breathe… Continue Reading →

Gathering Of The 500 Featuring Conflict, Subhumans etc – London Underworld 7/12/13

This is the first of two gigs where Conflict are gathering together a selection of bands and possibly playing some of their songs for the last time. You forget just had overbearing Camden can be on a Sat, full of… Continue Reading →

I Shalt Become – Louisiana Voodoo (Saadi Saati)

I absolutely loved drinking in the rich atmospheric grimness of ‘Poison’ the last 2010 released album from Illinois based black metal entity S Holliman. It conveyed a huge depth of expression with a classical backbone swirling around eldritch black metal… Continue Reading →
