Bangalore, India isn’t the first place that springs to mind when you think about heavy metal. However, such is the reach of our music that geographical and cultural boundaries are forever crossed. Kryptos have been at the forefront of Indian heavy metal for some time. Starting life in 1998 when Nolan Lewis and Ganesh K formed the band, their journey has seen them supporting the likes of Iron Maiden, Kreator and Exodus. Album number six, “Force Of Danger” is the latest chapter in their impressive history.

The hard-hitting introduction to album opener “Raging Steel” sets an early template. A taut riff is overlaid with melodic lead guitar and the theme carries on into “Hot Wire” with its choppy Metallica feel. Early ‘80’s Judas Priest comes in on “Dawnbreakers”. Straight forward old school heavy metal with just the right amount of snarl in the vocals makes for a nice edge but there is the feeling of a bit of same-same creeping through thus far. The Exodus fuelled Paul Baloff styled vocals give these tracks the edge they need and keep things afloat.

Where this album really opens up is on the two closing cuts. Title track “Force Of Danger” has a nice mid-tempo riff and is more of a Metallica “Black Album” styled chugger and is for my mind the stand out track. The same can be said of closer
“Shadowmancer” with its huge, grand horns-in-the-air riffs. Melody is still the driver but these numbers have more essence and power showcasing what this band is truly capable of.

“Force Of Danger” is a solid album flying the flag of classic heavy metal. There’s enough venom to give it an edge whilst still having a highly accessible sound. Clocking in at an economical 35 minutes it’s short, sharp and no nonsense. Clean production and razor-sharp focus make for a good listen and a craving for a live outing.
