It is now a new decade, and the last time my Ave Noctum bio was updated, it was 2014. So much has changed since then, not least my time ravaged hulk having reached its half century. Vinyl has gone from being a thing of memory to a thing for the trendy and hip (but try going for a walk with that stereo in your pocket!), and tapes have gone from being a best forgotten “fragile”, in every sense of the word, memory, to the most kvlt of the kvlt and grimm offering! What has not changed, however, is my dedication to hard rock and heavy metal. Indeed, my formative years were saturated by the likes of Cream, Deep Purple, Queen, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Genesis, Yes, and their ilk, as well as healthy chunks of Motown on the turntable that was the pre-internet stereophonic centre for entertainment in my mother's 70's single parent household, and my first “concert of choice” (I exclude some I was taken to/performed in against my will) was Motörhead in 1984 in Manchester. However, after living through the heyday of thrash when the “Big Four” were young and hungry, I still revel in the new generations of musicians who rally against the written by committee and autotuned blandness of modern popular music. Every couple of years the popular press features articles about “the death of rock”, whilst lauding the latest autotuned flash in the pan act, and then does a volte face to promote a short lived NME bait guitar act, but the fact is that metal and hard rock lives, and indeed thrives, below the radar of popular consciousness, and I, like my fellow Ave Noctum scribes, revel in that world. So, keep reading, keep supporting the scene you love by buying the music, purchasing merch, and going to the shows, and here's to another decade of excellent music that sticks a stiffly raised middle finger in the direction of popular opinion.

RealmBuilder – Blue Flame Cavalry – I Hate

Righto, I’ll admit straight away, I’m confused by this CD. An American two piece multi instrumentalist studio album only band (as far as I can tell, please prove me wrong if they tour), on a small Swedish label, producing a… Continue Reading →

Hell – Curse & Chapter (Nuclear Blast)

Curse and Chapter’ is the follow up to Hell’s début album from 2011, a release that won accolade upon accolade, and for many was the metal album of the year. Now, in November 2013, Hell are following up with their… Continue Reading →

Tombstoned – ST (Svart)

I will confess that I was a little confused when asked by my editor to review this; hadn’t I just reviewed Tombstones a couple of weeks ago? Nope, this is Tombstoned, a different, albeit confusingly similarly named band. Hey, I… Continue Reading →

Generation Kill – We’re All Gonna Die (Nuclear Blast)

Where to start with Generation Kill? That’s a toughie. The phrase ‘Generation Kill’ is one that is far more prevalent in the USA then the UK, referring to the TV series that depicted the early “glory days” of the US… Continue Reading →

Noctum – Final Sacrifice (Metal Blade)

Another new album, and another band I’ve never heard of, although each and every track on Noctum’s Metal Blade début ‘Final Sacrifice’ tells of classic metal and hard rock influences. Hailing from Sweden, home of so much excellent metal and… Continue Reading →

Sahg – Delusions of Grandeur (Indie)

For years I’d managed to pretty much avoid Sahg; nothing to do with the band’s ability and nothing deliberate, it was just a case of too many acts to listen to and so little spare time. As it was, this… Continue Reading →

Red Fang – Whales and Leeches (Relapse)

I had bought two Red Fang albums, the eponymous ‘Red Fang’ and ‘Murder the Mountains’ based on the personal recommendation of a very occasional drinking companion Ben Ward (hear that clanging noise folks? It’s a massive name drop!), and whilst… Continue Reading →

Monster Magnet – Last Patrol (Napalm Records)

Go into any bar full of musos and a not uncommon debate is about the influences of certain substances on certain musicians and their albums. Is the album fast and paranoid? Cocaine.  Angry as fuck?  Amphetamine. Fuzzed out stoner rock?… Continue Reading →

Blues Pills – Devil Man – Nuclear Blast

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, there is definitely something retro in the air at the moment.  Forget the Glastonbury attending NME trendoids who think “Old School” means something from the late nineties, there seems to be… Continue Reading →

Domovoyd – Oh Sensibility (Svart)

Firstly, let me say sorry; I fear that with this review I will bring down on my head the wrath of any dyed in the wool hardcore metal fan reading this site, and for that I apologise. However, I must… Continue Reading →

Tombstones – Red Skies and Dead Eyes – (Soulseller)

I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again; how does such a tiny population as is spread throughout Norway manage to produce so many great metal and rock bands?  Whilst this, at the moment, United Kingdom of Great Britain… Continue Reading →

Windhand – Soma (Relapse)

Okay folks, without having even heard of the band, the first thing I noticed when I loaded this album from American doom outfit Windhand, even before I’d played the album, was the fact that the final track, ‘Boleskine’, was listed… Continue Reading →
