Listening to music and reading have been my favourite pastime since I was a teenager. I grew up in a small town and there wasn’t much else to do. Why I developed a liking for guitar-heavy music I can’t really say. It just appealed to me. A friend from school made me a mix tape with bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. There was no record store in my hometown, but there was a small shop that sold all kinds of electrical appliances that would order records for you if you asked them to. The first album I ever purchased was by Guns ‘n Roses. From there, my musical taste moved forward to hardcore and punk bands, mostly because I had skater friends, and also because with time I understood more and more English and developed a taste for good lyrics. By good I mean critical of main-stream culture and society. In my life, music matters. The written word matters. Poetry matters. Philosophy matters. Like Mr. Rollins, I medicate with music (and literature, and philosophy). The best thing for me is when great music and great lyrics combine. An example? Shellac, Copper. Copper, you’ll never be gold. Or: Mediocrity, you’ll never pass for the real thing. Another one: Cop Shoot Cop, It only hurts when I breath. Boy, do I love the irony in that one. I enjoy figuring out what a work of art is about, or what went through someone’s head when they wrote something. It feels good, when I know I understood, it feels even better when I can relate to what is being expressed. That’s why I write reviews.

Knoest – Dag (Van)

This is a tough one. Even after listening to Knoest’s debut album Dag at least a dozen times, I’m still not sure what to think of it. Knoest play black metal and blackened post metal (and rather a garden variety… Continue Reading →

Temple Koludra – Seven! Sirens! To A Lost Archetype (Transcending Obscurity)

Although founded in 2010, Temple Koludra are a relatively young band regarding releases and fan base. However, the people behind it, though preferring to remain unknown, are very likely experienced musicians. The album at hand, the band’s first after two… Continue Reading →

Jess by the Lake – Under the Red Light Shine (Svart)

Jess By the Lake is a solo project of Jasmin Saarela, singer of the band Jess and the Ancient Ones. While her main band is known for a heavy psych sound featuring a bit of the occult, her solo project… Continue Reading →

Labirinto & Tangled Thoughts of Leaving – Ljubljana, Slovenia, Channel Zero 25/5/19

Australians Tangled Thoughts of Leaving released with No Tether one of my favourite albums of 2018, therefore I had to go and see them on their European tour. Ljubljana, Slovenia, was the closest show to where I live, so that’s… Continue Reading →

Onkos – Onkos (I, Voidhanger)

The world of metal certainly doesn’t avoid difficult subjects, or subjects the majority of people shy away from. In fact, you could say metal seeks those subjects out. Yet, the album at hand takes difficult subjects to an entirely new… Continue Reading →

Bob Malmström – Länge leve (Elitbolaget)

Punk! And as it should be: loud, fast, angry, trashy, vulgar and respectless. Länge leve, has got it all, including a “fuck you” attitude. Or how else to call it when a Finnish band send their release to a British… Continue Reading →

Idle Hands – Mana (Eisenwald)

The inventiveness of the wider metal genre never ceases to amaze and delight me. Every once in a while, a band comes along that gives a familiar sound a new twist, a twist that I did not expect, making me… Continue Reading →

Heilung, Seven That Spells, Messa – Roadburn Festival Tilburg Holland

Too little time, too many good bands to see! That about sums up the two days I spent at this year’s Roadburn festival. The three shows I’ve chosen to review might not look like the obvious choices, but taken together… Continue Reading →

Arabrot Speciale – Die Nibelungen (Pelagic)

Where to start, and where to end? What to mention and what to leave out? How much context and explanation to provide? Figuring that one out has never been quite so difficult. There are so many interesting details to convey… Continue Reading →

Radare – Der Endless Dream (Golden Antenna)

Wiesbaden. Not the most exciting place on earth. Not today, at least. Fancy, though. And rich. The German town used to be very famous for its hot springs, and for being a bathing and gambling place. It was once called… Continue Reading →

Falaise – A Place I Don’t Belong To (A Sad Sadness Song)

Where’s the righteous rage paired with the credible threat of action gone from music? You know, the thing that hardcore had a claim on. Black metal, too, but in a different way. From today’s perspective, anyway, being anti-Christian seems pretty… Continue Reading →
