Listening to music and reading have been my favourite pastime since I was a teenager. I grew up in a small town and there wasn’t much else to do. Why I developed a liking for guitar-heavy music I can’t really say. It just appealed to me. A friend from school made me a mix tape with bands like Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. There was no record store in my hometown, but there was a small shop that sold all kinds of electrical appliances that would order records for you if you asked them to. The first album I ever purchased was by Guns ‘n Roses. From there, my musical taste moved forward to hardcore and punk bands, mostly because I had skater friends, and also because with time I understood more and more English and developed a taste for good lyrics. By good I mean critical of main-stream culture and society. In my life, music matters. The written word matters. Poetry matters. Philosophy matters. Like Mr. Rollins, I medicate with music (and literature, and philosophy). The best thing for me is when great music and great lyrics combine. An example? Shellac, Copper. Copper, you’ll never be gold. Or: Mediocrity, you’ll never pass for the real thing. Another one: Cop Shoot Cop, It only hurts when I breath. Boy, do I love the irony in that one. I enjoy figuring out what a work of art is about, or what went through someone’s head when they wrote something. It feels good, when I know I understood, it feels even better when I can relate to what is being expressed. That’s why I write reviews.

Horde of Hel – Döden Nalkas (Regain Records)

Things don’t get much bleaker than industrial black metal. So, if you’re looking for something uplifting, you might want to pass on this one. I don’t know whether this really is, as the blurb claims, “the most extreme (…) record… Continue Reading →

The Ocean Collective – Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic (Metal Blade)

You might remember seeing a meme about a band announcing a world tour. The funny bit was that their “world tour” had dates mostly in the US and Western Europe, while the whole of the Asian continent, as well as… Continue Reading →

Orochen – Thylacine (Suicide Records)

This reviewing business is weird, I tell you. Every time I am about to press play on a new album, I feel a mixture of curiosity, excitement, reluctance and aversion. Every time, without fail. While the first two feelings are… Continue Reading →

Over the Voids… – Hadal (Nordvis)

I’m late reviewing this. Apologies. It somehow got drowned in the background noise of these tumultuous times. But luckily the editor keeps track of everything and gave me a nudge, so here we are. Over the Voids… (no, that’s not… Continue Reading →

Black Magnet – Hallucination Scene (20 Buck Spin)

Anyone up for music that’s the equivalent of and goes well with stroboscopic light? Because that’s what 20 Buck Spin have got here for you. Industrial metal – and of a rather numbing kind. An unusual release this is for… Continue Reading →

Aleynmord – The Blinding Light (AOP Records)

Another band from Portland, Oregon, the town where seemingly everybody makes music, and in many cases music of the darker kind. A new band from musical Portland, where people – the mayor included – are standing up against Trump, his… Continue Reading →

Rome – The Lone Furrow (Trisol)

At the beginning of the year, I had the impression that everyone who could afford to do so was putting off releases. Since the beginning of the summer, in normal times a bit of a dry season, great albums have… Continue Reading →

God’s Bastard – Last Standing Village (I, Voidhanger)

God’s Bastard… Well, it sure doesn’t sound like the being in question was a planned child! And family relations must be pretty complicated… From the looks of things, anyway, it seems that a lot of bad feelings are being harbored…. Continue Reading →

Next Life – Guru Meditation (Fysisk Format)

A bit of craziness is always a good ingredient in any kind of art. In fact, finding appealing art and music might be about discovering the wackiness that agrees with you. Next Life’s new album Guru Meditation features a very… Continue Reading →

Rope Sect – The Great Flood (Iron Bonehead)

Hear ye, hear ye! Rope Sect are about to unleash The Great Flood upon the Earth! Mark your calendars, lovers of all things musically dark and underground, because the twelfth of August will prove to be one of the more… Continue Reading →

Omitir – Ode (Loudriver Records)

Omitir (engl.: to omit) is a one-man black metal project from Porto, Portugal. This is my first encounter with them, although Gróvio, the man behind the project, has been making music for quite some time. Ode, the album at hand,… Continue Reading →

Maggot Heart – Mercy Machine (Rapid Eye Records)

What we have here is “a rock album about sex, death and the pursuit of freedom”. If you have no idea how the words above could be related, dear reader, and if you don’t find them appealing in the least,… Continue Reading →
