I grew up in the North East at the tail end of NWOBHM and US Power Metal scene and more noticably during the glam vs. thrash conflict. I then upped sticks to spend a good few years in the West Midlands during the late 90's.

Over the years I have become a fanatical collector of records, T shirts and CD's and in this current internet age, mp3's are not what i consider to be called part a record collection for the "record"!

I decided to start writing reviews as I thought that it would be a good way to give back some positive support for artists and a music phenomenon that has given me great pleasure over the years. I prefer to listen to bands that can really play their instruments and have a talent for melody and good arrangements. I try to be constructive with everything I endeavour within music. When on or off "duty" you will more than likely see me enjoying rather a few pints of the good stuff at the bar in the London area and maybe at some various other watering holes around the country...i don't bite, i just stumble a bit...

Long live metal with all its triumphs and tribulations, metal fans are a community, it's a lifestyle, it is everything to man and beast!

Revel In Flesh – Manifested Darkness (FDA Rekotz)

Last years ‘Deathevokation’ debut from German death metallers Revel In Flesh was a cool effort in the Swedeath styled sound. Far from them being overtly observed as a tribute band, Revel In Flesh have a modern momentum based on a… Continue Reading →

Slaughterday – Cosmic Horror (FDA Rekotz)

This 4-track demo will be released as a very limited tape version (166 copies) so if you want the physical article you will need to get in quick as most are sold out via pre-order. But have no fear; this… Continue Reading →

Pretty Maids – Motherland (Frontiers Records)

If ever there were a band that did not receive the recognition for genuine fulfilling song-writing with total metal credentials in their earlier days then it is Denmark’s Pretty Maids. You may have heard their tunes covered before (Hammerfall –… Continue Reading →

Stryper – Second Coming (Frontiers Records)

Famed and ridiculed for their beliefs and Christian values, Stryper (“Salvation Through Redemption Yielding Peace, Encouragement and Righteousness”) have always been more about their lyrics alone, certainly to me anyway. ‘Second Coming’ features two new tracks and fourteen re-recorded versions… Continue Reading →

Tormented – Death Awaits (Listenable Records)

We lost Dismember, we’ve recently lost or will be losing later this year Vomitory…Tormented have the right style and persona to follow in their footsteps although I will refrain from saying that they could replace them, we are not quite… Continue Reading →

Brofest – Northumbria University, Newcastle 1st and 2nd March 2013

It is a real commendable task to form a new festival with some forgotten names of the glorious NWOBHM genre in Newcastle – this was different. The venue was pretty amazing (much better than what the original venue would have… Continue Reading →

Lifeless – Godconstruct (FDA Rekotz)

These German’s perform Swedeath rather well, their last offering, their first official full length album ‘Beyond the Threshold of Death’ was rather special (released in 2008 but there was a major distribution re-release in 2010 with different artwork). With all… Continue Reading →

Beissert – Darkness: Devil: Death (Agonia Records)

It has taken me a while to put down my thoughts on this release as it is one of those albums where your opinion changes with every listening session; it is a very busy album with lots of influences included… Continue Reading →

U.D.O. – Life in Sofia DVD (AFM Records)

U.D.O. the band and Udo Dirkschneider the man is somewhat of a metal music institution worldwide, coming to the scene via Accept, I myself have been guilty of laying many Accept references at this bands door over the years and… Continue Reading →

Stryper – Live In Indonesia at the Java Rockin’ Land (Wienerworld)

People will look at the band name and immediately form a particular opinion, but love them or ridicule them, Stryper were and are (having reformed in 2005) a valid, genuine heavy metal band. Their lyrical content may not be to… Continue Reading →

Steel Raiser – Regeneration (Pure Steel Records)

Italian power metal does not have to involve dragons, in fact Sicilian band Steel Raiser sound more like a ‘Painkiller’ era Judas Priest. Tracks like ‘Magic Circle’ and opener ‘Cyberlazer’ provide vocal styles similar to German metal bands, namely UDO… Continue Reading →

Coldsteel – America Idle (Stormspell Records)

Re-activated after years away from the scene, a trait common with Stormspell bands (which is great news!), these thrashers have this EP ready to whet your appetite. One of the first things you may come to realise with this is… Continue Reading →
