I grew up in the North East at the tail end of NWOBHM and US Power Metal scene and more noticably during the glam vs. thrash conflict. I then upped sticks to spend a good few years in the West Midlands during the late 90's.

Over the years I have become a fanatical collector of records, T shirts and CD's and in this current internet age, mp3's are not what i consider to be called part a record collection for the "record"!

I decided to start writing reviews as I thought that it would be a good way to give back some positive support for artists and a music phenomenon that has given me great pleasure over the years. I prefer to listen to bands that can really play their instruments and have a talent for melody and good arrangements. I try to be constructive with everything I endeavour within music. When on or off "duty" you will more than likely see me enjoying rather a few pints of the good stuff at the bar in the London area and maybe at some various other watering holes around the country...i don't bite, i just stumble a bit...

Long live metal with all its triumphs and tribulations, metal fans are a community, it's a lifestyle, it is everything to man and beast!

Pilgrim – II: Void Worship (Metal Blade)

Pilgrim’s full length debut ‘Misery Wizard’ was an instant doom classic and the progression and experience of the past couple of years has ensured that you will recognise a good thing first time around when you spin ‘II: Void Worship’… Continue Reading →

Massacre – Back From Beyond (Century Media)

This is a band whose name screams forefathers of the American death metal scene, that being the case, they only have two records behind them, although the second effort ‘Promise’ was well “beyond” (couldn’t help it!) their debut ‘From Beyond’… Continue Reading →

Paganizer – Cadaver Casket (On A Gurney to Hell) (Cyclone Empire)

Yes it’s that man again, the one man SweDeath juggernaut Rogga Johansson, perhaps with his most recognisable outfit, the first vinyl release (although fans of the band will know this was given away free in a Swedish magazine in November… Continue Reading →

Gamma Ray – Empire of the Undead (earMusic)

Gamma Ray are pretty much an institution in power metal terms, many albums are considered classics right from their debut to some of their material released during the difficult 90’s (or so some bands call it). ‘Empire of the Undead’… Continue Reading →

Interview – Dark Forest

Dark Forest (UK) have been high on my radar since their demo days when I first caught them live in London one evening. Since then, record deals have come along and their general persona and musical talent has also grown;… Continue Reading →

Vampire – ST (Century Media)

These Swedes for me set the Live Evil Festival in London late last year alight with their death thrash black arsenal of nasty, often breakneck paced metal madness. Quickly becoming something of an underground sensation, it’s therefore quite surprising that… Continue Reading →

Dark Forest – The Awakening (Cruz Del Sur)

I have followed this UK Black Country band for a long time since their demo days, I have admired and enjoyed their live performances for more times than I care to remember, but stone me…Dark Forest have pulled the genie… Continue Reading →

Iron Savior – Rise of the Hero (AFM)

Iron Savior are a band that have been around for a while, whilst I was admittedly guilty of ignoring some of their past releases, especially after the departure of Kai Hansen (Gamma Ray), this new release kicks my doubts into… Continue Reading →

Sparta – Welcome to Hell (High Roller)

Sparta, like many NWOBHM bands at the time did not release that much material (two singles and a split release) and it’s virtually impossible without a bank loan to own these releases in these times in above average condition. But… Continue Reading →

Hammerdrone – Clone of Europa (SR)

Hammerdrone are no strangers to Ave Noctum and it is nice to hear finally a full length debut album from this melodic death metal band based in Canada. A lot of the music style is akin to the Amon Amarth… Continue Reading →

Battleaxe – Heavy Metal Sanctuary (SPV)

Battleaxe are a UK band that has reformed in recent times and thankfully reactivated amongst the live scene, something I was disappointed with at last year’s Brofest cancellation (rectified this year I believe).  The band were always on the fringes… Continue Reading →

Backwater – Take Extreme Forms (Iron Shield Records)

Backwater is back, these gents hail from Germany and were part of the original invasion of traditional heavy and speed metal that was coming out of this land during the mid-eighties with similar bands of that ilk being Gravestone, Restless… Continue Reading →
