Born in Liverpool and brought up on a healthy dose of classic rock, glam rock and hair metal, I could sing "The Jack" by AC/DC word for word as a 5 year old much to everyone's amusement.
Fast-forward a few years to age 14 and I've re-connected with my rock roots after a few questionable friends and influences. I got into metal via Nu-Metal at the end of the 90's and the turning point was getting a copy of "Reign in Blood" for my 16th birthday. Since then it's been metal all the way with a steady course of beer and Jack Daniels to compliment it.
Thrash is the go to genre for me, but I also have an appreciation of prog metal, classic rock, hard rock, power metal, death metal and stoner rock. Anything which has a great guitar sound or a groove you just have to bang your head to goes down well for me too. I play guitar and bass, mostly for the enjoyment of hassling the neighbours but I'd much rather be in the pit than on stage playing to it. As much as I love playing, listening to music is my passion as is expanding my ever growing music library.
At a gig I will no doubt be the one trying to down the pint in my hand whilst palming all my things onto my better half so I can run headfirst into the pit.

Hammerfall – Built To Last (Napalm)

As summer ends and winter looms on the horizon, the clichéd view to take is that the later months of the year are ripe for the Northern European stongholds of music to flex their worth, given how in places, it’s… Continue Reading →

Crator -The Ones Who Create, The Ones Who Destroy (S/R)

When two parts Origin, two parts Gorguts and one part Foaming At The Mouth combine, you end up with a death-black fusion resulting in what people will undoubtedly label as a ‘Supergroup’. In this instance, the fusion of these elements… Continue Reading →

11 Paranoias – Reliquary For A Dream World (Ritual Productions)

Psychedelic gloom and doom outfit 11 Paranoias blew me away last time I covered them when they unleashed the rather phenomenal and reality distorting ‘Stealing Fire From Heaven’ back in the tail-end of 2014 and having experienced them live since… Continue Reading →

We all know this bunch. Sonata Arctica are one of the big names in the Euro-Power metal scene, known for their bright nature, their technical chops, dramatic atmospheric ambience and most of all, the expressive and dynamic vocal delivery with… Continue Reading →

Wormrot – Voices (Earache)

‘#MakeEaracheGrindAgain’ This single hashtag across the RJD main stage video screen at this year’s Bloodstock 2016 festival said enough. Even if it was hard sometimes to make out the tracks being advertised, one look at the imagery said enough –… Continue Reading →

Revolution Within – Annihilation (Rastilho Records)

Portugal isn’t exactly a place you would associate with thrash metal when it comes to recognisable artists. Aside from the rather intense and impressive Switchtense which I covered earlier this year, my only real experience with Portuguese metal are the… Continue Reading →

Monte Pittman – Inverted Grasp of Balance (Metal Blade)

Being a guitarist can be a tough career choice. If you’re ambitious and dedicated, practise your chops every day and refine your technique to the point of where you rival John Petrucci, you might get lucky, join a band and… Continue Reading →

Evil Invaders – In For The Kill (Napalm)

Belgian thrash and speed metal four piece Evil Invaders are an in your face bunch. Having been blown away by their debut full length “Pulses Of Pleasure” last year, a stunning display of blistering paced riffery and flashy leads which… Continue Reading →

Brant Bjork and the Low Desert Punk Band – Tao Of The Devil (Napalm)

“I got all that I need… I got the green…” These are the ten words which open this album, and adequately serve as a synopsis of what to expect. Stereotypical? Perhaps.. But when you look at the mastermind behind this… Continue Reading →

Sometimes you seem to hit the proverbial jackpot in this music thing we do here at Ave Noctum and when you get an artist who gives you something fantastic to work with, in this case it is a wonderful concept… Continue Reading →

Lordi – Monstereophonic (Theaterror vs. Demonarchy) (AFM)

Oh Lordi! That was probably the reaction to many people upon seeing this on the review list. With numerous people all vying to play the martyr and take this off the list, I ended up getting it, being Ave Noctums… Continue Reading →
