Born in Liverpool and brought up on a healthy dose of classic rock, glam rock and hair metal, I could sing "The Jack" by AC/DC word for word as a 5 year old much to everyone's amusement.
Fast-forward a few years to age 14 and I've re-connected with my rock roots after a few questionable friends and influences. I got into metal via Nu-Metal at the end of the 90's and the turning point was getting a copy of "Reign in Blood" for my 16th birthday. Since then it's been metal all the way with a steady course of beer and Jack Daniels to compliment it.
Thrash is the go to genre for me, but I also have an appreciation of prog metal, classic rock, hard rock, power metal, death metal and stoner rock. Anything which has a great guitar sound or a groove you just have to bang your head to goes down well for me too. I play guitar and bass, mostly for the enjoyment of hassling the neighbours but I'd much rather be in the pit than on stage playing to it. As much as I love playing, listening to music is my passion as is expanding my ever growing music library.
At a gig I will no doubt be the one trying to down the pint in my hand whilst palming all my things onto my better half so I can run headfirst into the pit.

Destruction – Born To Perish (Nuclear Blast)

Some bands are a bastard to write about; it is easy to wax lyrical about song structures and compositional ability, virtuoso performances or atmospheric impact. It can be difficult to write about bands that have a tried and tested formula… Continue Reading →

Excuse – Prophets From the Occultic Cosmos (Shadow Kingdom)

I tried to do some digging about for info on this band but my efforts were in vain. Excuse are an enigmatic bunch as far as I am concerned, so based off what little information I have available to me,… Continue Reading →

Global Scum – Odium (NRT Records)

Global Scum is the one-man project of Austrian multi-instrumentalist Manuel Harlander and “Odium” is the second release from the project, following on from the highly praised debut offering “Hell Is Home” which came out in the closing stages of 2017…. Continue Reading →

High Fighter – Champain (Argonauta)

Hamburg based stoner-doom-sludge outfit High Fighter are back once again and ready to bring the filth this summer. With their first album, “Scars & Crosses” considered to be a success with how it blended fuzz-laden riffs with exotic flair, schizophrenic… Continue Reading →

Third Wave – Metamorphosis (S/R)

Progressive and Metalcore are two words you would never normally see sequentially. For the main part, Metalcore was a dynamic genre which really exploded in the early 2000’s, seeming to pick up where Nu-Metal left off, before it became a… Continue Reading →

Ripped To Shreds – Demon Scriptures (Pulverised Records)

There is a lot to be said about introducing cultural influences as lyrical inspirations and conceptual themes for songs and albums. Sometimes it works rather well, sometimes it backfires and people get up in arms about it and call cultural… Continue Reading →

Ascend The Hollow – Echoes Of Existence (DR Music)

Have you ever wondered what the resulting combination of Industrial, Electronic, Progressive, Death and Modern Metal would sound like? I know a fair few folk who would feel nauseous at the prospect of just imagining it whilst others would try… Continue Reading →

Footprints In The Custard – A New Low (S/R)

One of the core concepts in Thrash Metal is how fun it is. Sure, you can be all serious like Slayer, Metallica (pre-1991) and Megadave are, but Anthrax were the band who managed to bring the fun with their infectious… Continue Reading →

Rendezvous Point – Universal Chaos (Long Branch Records)

As mentioned previously in my coverage of their debut album “Through The Solar Storm”, Rendezvous Point have a bright future ahead of them. With members who have been involved with some of the best in Europe’s progressive metal scene, Rendezvous… Continue Reading →

Blaze Out – Instinct (BloodFireDeath)

Catalonian metallers Blaze Out join a long list of Iberian Peninsula based metal bands I have covered, and all of them have one thing in common- they have a serious rhythmic groove to them. From Angelus Apatrida to Pánico Al… Continue Reading →

Fractal Universe – Rhizomes Of Insanity (Metal Blade)

Progressive Death Metal is a tough genre, especially the more exotic side of it. I’ve said this several times in the past few years and I will stand by that statement. It’s inherently complex nature, straddling the boundaries of several… Continue Reading →
