Matt Mason (The Mighty One)

Big mouth. Big belly. Big...............ego! Since the age of 14 I have had headphones strapped to my head blasting metal, punk , goth and hippety hop. Never a genre purist I feel that the worlds musicians are merely there to provide the soundtrack to my adventures from my Norf Landan roots to my exile in the Suffolk wilderness (Ipswich).
Having spent the early part of the millennium (This one I ain't that old!) rocking the airwaves on TotalRock I can now be found presenting the MattCave every Friday night 9-Midnight under the stations new name www.bloodstockradio.com . Masochists amongst you can catch me telling bad jokes and reuniting photographers with lost lenses as the compère of the international London Tattoo Convention every summer. Inkredible!

Gravesend – Gowanus Death Stomp (20 Buck Spin)

If you are not familiar with Brooklyn NYC’s Gravesend then click here for my review of their debut album. It is killer (the album not the review – although it is quite witty and well thought out but I digress). All… Continue Reading →

Marthe – Further In Evil (Southern Lord)

An exciting debut record that appears to have come from nowhere. The last time I had something like this to review was Hulder’s debut and that ended up being my album of the year! Further in Evil could well end up hitting… Continue Reading →

Xorsist – At the Somber Steps to Serenity (Prosthetic Records)

The ciiiiiiircle of Liiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiife – to paraphrase and bastardise Reg Dwight. Well in reality it is the circle of death – Death Metal more specifically. The internet is awash with new Old School Death Metal bands, teens and twenty summats who have picked up an HM-2 pedal on Ebay and… Continue Reading →

Blencathra – II: On these Shores Where Nothing Now Stands (Naturmacht)

UK Black Metal is in rude health in my opinion. I know that Dawn Ray’d have just called it a day leaving a massive gap but there is so much out there to enjoy.  I am not gonna name ‘em all but will give some quick props to Underdark, Blood… Continue Reading →

Terra Builder – Solar Temple (Transcending Obscurity)

Dirty dirty dirty! Bad dog on your bed! This is pretty filthy stuff from Transcending Obscurity – as one would expect. Though the bands moniker sounds like a knock off Minecraft Rather than block combining and mad youtubers what you get is half an hour of gnarly deathgrind from Germany…. Continue Reading →

The Coffinshakers – Graves, Release Your Dead (Svart Records)

Horror Country n Western. From Sweden? Hmm. I like dark country. Whether it be from the Man in Black, RAW, Chris Stepleton or Hank Topless. Even a bit of Ghoultown if the mood is right – and the mood needed for… Continue Reading →

Tar Pond – Petrol (Prophecy Productions)

With a band name and an album title such as the above this was never gonna be light and fluffy or fast and spiky.  The fact that I have drank too much coffee this morning certainly puts me at odds with this dirty… Continue Reading →

Shunyata – The Dark Age (Black Lion Records)

Buddhist Black Metal from New England. OK the pvrists and troo believers have scattered. Now I can address the rest of you. Shunyata are a four-piece band from the USA – not to be mixed up with a Dutch stoner band of the same name. They may follow the beliefs… Continue Reading →

Heads For the Dead – In the Absence of Faith (Pulverised Records)

Multi-national horror obsessed Death Metal troupe Heads for the Dead follow up their 2022 album The Great Conjuration with a 5 track E.P paying homage to horror classics. If you have heard the aforementioned long player or any of their… Continue Reading →

The Circle – Of Awakening (AOP Records)

This is not summer music – however as Mother Nature is showing her wrath around the world causing death and destruction on a biblical scale this collection of dark atmospheric doomy metal seems to fit. The Circle are a three piece from Germany… Continue Reading →

Werewolves – My Enemies Look and Sound Like Me (Prosthetic Records)

Hmm is this some kind of conspiracy between Ave Noctum’s editor in chief and Prosthetic Records. This is the second album the label are putting out in August by acts that I have previously raved about. Is this being done to put some pep… Continue Reading →

An Autumn For Crippled Children – Closure (Prosthetic Records)

Prosthetic Records? More like Prolific records when it comes to AAFCC. Since their inception in 2010 this mysterious Dutch trio have released 10 albums – the latest Closure coming out on 4th August 2023, 5 E.P.s and 2 compilations. Ridiculous rate of release (ooh the alliteration felt… Continue Reading →
