Matt Mason (The Mighty One)

Big mouth. Big belly. Big...............ego! Since the age of 14 I have had headphones strapped to my head blasting metal, punk , goth and hippety hop. Never a genre purist I feel that the worlds musicians are merely there to provide the soundtrack to my adventures from my Norf Landan roots to my exile in the Suffolk wilderness (Ipswich).
Having spent the early part of the millennium (This one I ain't that old!) rocking the airwaves on TotalRock I can now be found presenting the MattCave every Friday night 9-Midnight under the stations new name www.bloodstockradio.com . Masochists amongst you can catch me telling bad jokes and reuniting photographers with lost lenses as the compère of the international London Tattoo Convention every summer. Inkredible!

Alcest – Kodama (Prophecy)

Blackgaze is a compound noun that strikes fear in the heart of many metaller, conjuring up images of bearded hipsters with pocket watch tattoos wanting to get their emo “awn” in a more mature and serious way. Alcest are the… Continue Reading →

When I saw the band was called Raw and they write songs titled Death waltz and Chopped Em Up I was expecting loud raging death metal. Thank fuck that is not what I got. Raw are a two piece from… Continue Reading →

Suns of Thyme – Cascades (Napalm)

Genres are ever expanding. No one wants to be constrained to a pigeon hole so they create new ones for others to then be forced into.  Berlin’s “Suns of Thyme” are described as Krautgaze which I-with Holmes like deduction take… Continue Reading →

Vampyromorpha – Fiendish Tales of Doom (Trollzorn)

Rarely does a title describe so succinctly the contents of an album. Vampyromorpha (not sure about that name) eschew the current trend of reworking Sabbath numbers or trying to be the new Blue Cheer in favour of mixing Pentagram and… Continue Reading →

Solanum – I.T.S.C (HPGD Productions)

When it comes to crossover, historically there seems to have been two approaches. Punks who beef up the riffs and get more metal or metallers who speed up the verses and get more hardcore. I usually preferred the former. Solanum… Continue Reading →

Brutus – Wandering Blind (Svart)

Retrosexual. How is that not a name yet? It could describe someone of any gender or sexuality who gets their rocks off by living with both bellbottom enclosed ankles in the period between 1968 and 1973. My sweet riff lord… Continue Reading →

Mr Bison – Asteroid (Subsound)

Italian Desert Rockers Mr Bison like Clutch and Monster Magnet. Who doesn’t?  Luckily these three Cecina blokes have taken their fandom and translated it into a pretty fine album in its own right. Asteroid is full of catchy upbeat stoner… Continue Reading →

Atala – Shaman’s Path of the Serpent (S/R)

Out of the heat and dust of San Bernardino rumbles the trio entitled “Atala”.  Atala is either a 7th Century monk or an Italian make of bicycle. What is more likely in my mind is these lads take their moniker from… Continue Reading →

Mantar- Ode to the Flame (Nuclear Blast)

At a mere three years old this Hamburg duo have created a moderate stir in the metal cesspool of late.  Comprising of vocalist /guitarist Hanno Klaenhardt and Erinc Sakarya on drums this gruesome twosome mix up elements of Black Metal, Doom… Continue Reading →

Parasit – A Proud Tradition of Stupidity (Cyclone Empire)

With recent releases by Extreme Noise Terror and Discharge – both blinding albums GO GET EM! – I was itching to get my ears around this bunch of brutality from Swedish D Beat Crusties Parasit. The band, formed in 2010… Continue Reading →
