Author Martin Harris

Rock and metal have been in my existence for about 30 years and saw me go through a rapid weaning period that covered AC/DC, Maiden, Saxon, Whitesnake, Motorhead, etc from about 1982 to 1984 before shifting to thrash in the summer of 1984. At that point my only mission was to find the fastest, most violent music on the planet resulting checking out every genre in extreme music from death metal and grindcore to crust punk and hardcore all of which I still adore today and buy albums from and go see live. During the 80s I grew up in the infamous Bradford thrash scene, a time I still dearly miss such was the inventiveness and great camaraderie it held. I’m a bit of phase metaller, going from one style to another, through sheer investigation of finding something new, but always sticking with them all. I’m a total sucker for double bass and blast beats and always will be no matter what genre it comes from. I absolutely detest people that have joined the metal scene because it is trendy or their mates like it, likewise I detest people who are shallow and think this music is a fad of growing up. Most of us are extremely well educated and articulate individuals who prefer freedom of self expression than indoctrination by mass media organisations hell bent on artistic sterilisation. Much of my cash is spent on following metal and I wouldn’t change a thing about it because it is the best music scene in the world.

Ruin Lust – Dissimulant (20 Buck Spin)

There probably couldn’t have been a more appropriate album to review for Ave Noctum than this which is my 666th album review for the site. This is the second time I’ve reviewed a Ruin Lust album with the first being… Continue Reading →

Ôros Kaù – Thanatos (I, Voidhanger Records)

I do like bands that have some meaning behind their monikers which this Belgian band has with their band name. According to Guillaume Cazalet aka CZLT, it is a transference from Greco-Egyptian Hermeticism as Pisces Aries. In fact if you… Continue Reading →

Cannibal Corpse – Chaos Horrific (Metal Blade)

Are there any death metal bands or metal bands in general that have consistently released one brutal album after the other without any compromise? I can name a few but not many that have been in existence for the same… Continue Reading →

Necrotted – Imperium (Reaper Entertainment)

Reading into the background of Germany’s Necrotted and spinning through their back catalogue to get a feel on their development it is clear the band loves the slam death scene. However the band isn’t afraid to diversify and you can… Continue Reading →

Thorn – Evergloom (Transcending Obscurity)

There are innumerable bands with the name Thorn and not just in the metal scene as this solo project, fronted by Brennen Westermeyer, hails from Arizona in the USA. For a band that has only been around since 2020 he… Continue Reading →

Cryptopsy – As Gomorrah Burns (Nuclear Blast)

My first experience of the whirlwind wizardry that is Cryptopsy came with their debut album ‘Blasphemy Made Flesh’ but what really blew my head off was the follow up album ‘None So Vile’. I’m pretty sure that any fans of… Continue Reading →

Dying Fetus – Make Them Beg For Death (Relapse Records)

A friend of mine once noted that the album titles by this pioneering death metal band sort of read like statements of intent, such as Dying Fetus Killing On Adrenaline or Dying Fetus Destroy The Opposition and so on and… Continue Reading →

Obituary + Pest Control – Leeds University 30/8/23

This tour by Obituary, dubbed the Barely Alive In The UK tour, saw the pioneering US death metal band play a string of dates across the UK and Ireland that I have not seen in some time. Indeed the recent… Continue Reading →

Incantation – Unholy Deification (Relapse Records)

There are few acts with a discography as consistent as this pioneering US death metal band. Pick any release throughout the bands near 35 year history and you’ll listen to some of the finest death metal the genre has to… Continue Reading →

Blasphemous Fire – Beneath The Darkness (Godz Ov War Productions)

Those of you that follow the underground death metal scenes of various countries probably know that this Portuguese act was originally called Summon and whilst there aren’t that many acts with this moniker Blasphemous Fire is certainly more memorable even… Continue Reading →

Horrendous – Ontological Mysterium (Season Of Mist)

Don’t be fooled by this US band’s moniker, as whilst it suggests a band of tremendous death metal brutality, this has been only relevant to the early part of the bands career and discography. Currently, and in the last couple… Continue Reading →

Dead And Dripping – Blackened Cerebral Rifts (Transcending Obscurity)

There are a number of aspects that strike you about this third release from US death metal act Dead And Dripping, a solo project that is the sole brainchild of the exceptionally talented Evan Daniele. Firstly the logo, which I… Continue Reading →
