Author Martin Harris

Rock and metal have been in my existence for about 30 years and saw me go through a rapid weaning period that covered AC/DC, Maiden, Saxon, Whitesnake, Motorhead, etc from about 1982 to 1984 before shifting to thrash in the summer of 1984. At that point my only mission was to find the fastest, most violent music on the planet resulting checking out every genre in extreme music from death metal and grindcore to crust punk and hardcore all of which I still adore today and buy albums from and go see live. During the 80s I grew up in the infamous Bradford thrash scene, a time I still dearly miss such was the inventiveness and great camaraderie it held. I’m a bit of phase metaller, going from one style to another, through sheer investigation of finding something new, but always sticking with them all. I’m a total sucker for double bass and blast beats and always will be no matter what genre it comes from. I absolutely detest people that have joined the metal scene because it is trendy or their mates like it, likewise I detest people who are shallow and think this music is a fad of growing up. Most of us are extremely well educated and articulate individuals who prefer freedom of self expression than indoctrination by mass media organisations hell bent on artistic sterilisation. Much of my cash is spent on following metal and I wouldn’t change a thing about it because it is the best music scene in the world.

Killbody Tuning – Hello! Welcome, So Far… (Hummus Records)

I am no stranger to the Hummus roster with the likes of Impure Wilhelmina, Coilguns, Red Kunz, NVRVD having releases in my collection, the label aims squarely at the experimental side of post rock or metal, whatever you want to… Continue Reading →

Necromutilator – Eucharistic Mutilations (Terror From Hell Records)

You have thirty seconds to name as many bands with necro (or nekro) in their name, starting NOW. So how many did you get to? Quite a few I suspect as we have yet another band utilising the necro prefix… Continue Reading →

Avatarium – All I Want (Nuclear Blast)

The creative forces behind this veritable super-group from Sweden consist of Leif Edling (Candlemass) and Marcus Jidell (Evergrey) to name the founders of the band but also the incredible talent of Jennie-Ann Smith on vocals whose tone and delivery will… Continue Reading →

Endname – Demetra (Slow Burn Records)

Reading the description of this Russian band’s music and style was enough for me to have a punt at this album. Portraying themselves as instrumental math-doom was intriguing but stating that some psychedelic touches had been added since their second… Continue Reading →

Dominanz – Noxious (Industrial Silence Productions)

Revolving around the talents of Roy Mathisen (ex-Taake) on vocals, bass, guitars and synth the act is rounded off with Jørn Tunsberg (Hades Almighty, ex-Immortal, ex-Old Funeral) on guitar and Frode Gaustad on drums this darkly industrial act with hugely… Continue Reading →

Skálmöld – Með Vættum (Napalm)

The dramatic cover art that adorns this third release from Icelandic folk viking metallers Skálmöld sets the scene so well you could quite easily imagine yourself immersed in the tumultuous seascape whilst absorbing the eight exhilarating songs contained within the… Continue Reading →

Torn The Fuck Apart – Sexually Transmitted Torture (Ossuary Industries)

Having had a digital promo copy of this album for quite a while now it was nice to get the diabolical CD from our editor at the recent Damnation Festival 2014 gig just so I can analyse the cover art… Continue Reading →

Liv Kristine – Vervain (Napalm)

The work ethic of Liv Kristine seems boundless as this fifth solo album hits the Autumn shelves in the light of her collaboration with Anneke Van Giersbergen and Kari Rueslåtten, the latter of very early 3rd And The Mortal fame,… Continue Reading →

Beyond Creation – Earthborn Evolution (Season Of Mist)

This Canadian band’s debut, “The Aura” hit me like a freight train when it hit my review pile in 2012 even though it had been released in 2011 by PRC Music. The version I had was a self released effort… Continue Reading →

Deserted Fear – Kingdom Of Worms (FDA Rekotz)

First introduced to me in 2012 via the debut “My Empire” it captured the very essence of death metal and I mean death metal as a whole, not old school, not Swedeath (though I did reference that in my review… Continue Reading →

Abraham / Coilguns – Split (Hummus Records)

A rather nifty little promo from Hummus records, hand numbered for the media can you believe and presenting a couple of heavyweight acts each with its own style creating a contrasting split release. There seems to have been a fad… Continue Reading →
