Author Martin Harris

Rock and metal have been in my existence for about 30 years and saw me go through a rapid weaning period that covered AC/DC, Maiden, Saxon, Whitesnake, Motorhead, etc from about 1982 to 1984 before shifting to thrash in the summer of 1984. At that point my only mission was to find the fastest, most violent music on the planet resulting checking out every genre in extreme music from death metal and grindcore to crust punk and hardcore all of which I still adore today and buy albums from and go see live. During the 80s I grew up in the infamous Bradford thrash scene, a time I still dearly miss such was the inventiveness and great camaraderie it held. I’m a bit of phase metaller, going from one style to another, through sheer investigation of finding something new, but always sticking with them all. I’m a total sucker for double bass and blast beats and always will be no matter what genre it comes from. I absolutely detest people that have joined the metal scene because it is trendy or their mates like it, likewise I detest people who are shallow and think this music is a fad of growing up. Most of us are extremely well educated and articulate individuals who prefer freedom of self expression than indoctrination by mass media organisations hell bent on artistic sterilisation. Much of my cash is spent on following metal and I wouldn’t change a thing about it because it is the best music scene in the world.

Whitechapel – Mark Of The Blade (Metal Blade)

As stated in the album’s promo information this album marks the ten year anniversary of Whitechapel, a band that has doggedly marched forward with each passing album despite the naysayers. Back in the1980s when thrash first appeared that scene too… Continue Reading →

Hadit – Introspective Contemplation Of The Microcosmos (Terror From Hell)

On seeing that this was from 2015 I got ready to berate its tardy arrival on the arrival pile but promptly forgave them when I saw it had an initial 150 copies cassette run and wished I had one. This… Continue Reading →

Dark Funeral – Where Shadows Forever Reign (Century Media)

Within the frontiers of modern day black metal where global exposure to every genre of music is at the click of a mouse the sinister, malevolent world of black metal that unfolded some 20 plus years ago is meaningless even… Continue Reading →

Katatonia – The Fall Of Hearts (Peaceville)

I have followed Sweden’s Katatonia religiously for over two decades and they have given me some of the most brilliant memories within music during that time either with landmark releases or just awe inspiring live performances whether electric or acoustic…. Continue Reading →

True Black Dawn – Come The Colorless Dawn (World Terror Committee Productions)

It appears this Finnish black metal act has had to add the word true to their name due to some other band called Black Dawn that threatened legal action which is completely retarded. Still Mayhem added true to their name… Continue Reading →

Karl Marx Was A Broker – Monoscope (Subsound)

There are two things that made me plump for this album; firstly the band name which is plain weird and secondly it is an instrumental album which is a sub-genre I have immersed myself into and has given me some… Continue Reading →

Hatebreed – The Concrete Confessional (Nuclear Blast)

I reckon if you asked anyone into rock or metal to name a hardcore band then Hatebreed is likely to come out of their mouths first, such is the bands ever growing popularity. Progression in hardcore can often lead to… Continue Reading →

Broken Teeth HC – At Peace Amongst Chaos (Nuclear Blast)

This Manchester crew has been fairly busy over the last few years releasing a slew of seven inchers to gain a name for themselves locally mainly but also nationally and beyond our shores due to touring escapades I suspect. Their… Continue Reading →

Hellspawn – There Has Never Been A Son Of Me (Old Temple)

Getting a one word band name that is unique is nigh on impossible these days as this Polish version of Hellspawn is without doubt one of the most savage around as they batter the world with their third album which… Continue Reading →

War Inside – S.U.T.U.R.E. (Finisterian Dead End)

For some reason I had an air of anticipation about this album that bordered on nervousness completely down to the band being from France as more often than not bands from there rarely have a rule book for their compositions… Continue Reading →

Svarttjern – Dødsskrik (Soulseller)

With so many sub-genres within black metal it is fantastic to hear a band who ignore all trends and send us back 20 years or so with their true black metal annihilation which is what this Norwegian band does with… Continue Reading →

The Wretched End – In These Woods, From These Mountains (Indie)

This band was on my radar in 2010 solely due to the band members who comprise notably of Samoth, Nils Fjellström and Cosmo who you can look up if unfamiliar. The two previous albums struck a chord with me instantly… Continue Reading →
