Having been bollocked by my old man for breaking his antique ‘stereogram’ with Ozzy’s ‘Bark At The Moon’ in 1984, I decided a life of metal worship was for me!
Likewise, after watching Zombie Flesheaters as a kid (early 80’s pre certification combined with an easily had over mum) and convincing myself that a zombie was more than likely in my wardrobe all night – a long and turbulent love affair with horror began. And I say turbulent as I regularly upset my horror geek mates by telling them Argento’s movies are all overrated shite. (You’d think they’d caught me fingering their mum when I tell them that).
I’m a big fan of thrash, death metal, and er….. proper 80’s poodle rock (love you Ratt) and Motorhead are the best band in the world.
Not a fan of tinny ‘recorded on a mono tape deck….. in a biscuit tin…… in the woods’ kvlt black metal.

Casket – Ghouls Of Filth EP (Lycanthropic Chants)

Dismember, Autopsy, Grave, Abscess….. like those bands? I do, and the ridiculously talented Marco Brinkmann from Detmold, Germany certainly does! Casket are Marco, (a sound engineer when on his down time from grave robbing and eating babies) and drummer Herr… Continue Reading →

Deserted Fear – Dead Shores Rising (Century Media)

I reviewed “My Empire”, the stunning debut album by German death metallers Deserted Fear for another (lesser) website back in 2012. It was a killer debut made by some seriously talented lads. ‘Kingdom Of Worms’, their second (anyone using the… Continue Reading →

Bill & Phil – Songs Of Darkness And Despair (Housecore Records)

Well there’s a pairing. Everyone’s favourite Chardonnay enthusiast, Phil Anselmo and Bill Moseley. Actor, total horror hero and portrayer of some of the most bat-shit bad-asses in fear cinema. Seriously, watch him as Chop-Top in TCM 2 or Otis in… Continue Reading →

Echelon – The Brimstone Aggrandizement (Transcending Obscurity)

This is probably the last album review I’ll pen in 2016 for Ave Noctum and fuck me, what a belter to go out on! I could waffle on like normal with some sub Jeremy Clarkson prose but it’s Friday night… Continue Reading →

This Is Endless – Inherit The Sin (S/R)

There’s a time to listen to wafty shit, you know the stuff… something symphonic, something with keyboards, windy forest sound effects and probably a warbly singer whining on about whatever issue they’ve taken up on someone else’s behalf that day…. Continue Reading →

Xoth – Invasion Of The Tentacube (S/R)

Read that album title again….”Invasion Of The Tentacube”. Maybe it’s due to being a grumpy 45 year old but I’m not usually a fan of ‘comedy metal’. There’s a place for humour but I don’t necessarily want it shoved in… Continue Reading →

Sentient Horror – Ungodly Forms (Testimony Records)

What do you want from old school Swedish death metal? Well I for one want a tasty blend of brutality & catchiness. I want howling vocals, meaty riffs, fuzzy guitars and pounding drums with a hint of D-beat. Vomitory, Entrails,… Continue Reading →

Wretched Soul – The Ghost Road (UKEM Records)

Damn I love this line of ‘work’ at times. Ever bought an album without knowing anything about the band, but purely on the cover art? I have. Many times as a kid just started on the road to metal nirvana… Continue Reading →

Dehumanized – Beyond The Mind (Comatose Music)

You can’t beat a big meaty slab of NYDM and after a longish break of four years since ‘Controlled Elite’ Dehumanized are back to batter us with their third album, ‘Beyond The Mind’.  Now if you’ve not had the pleasure… Continue Reading →

Vader – The Empire (Nuclear Blast)

Coming a couple of months after the teasing ‘Iron Times’ EP, Vader have released their thirteenth LP, ‘The Empire’. Now if, like me, you’re a long-time fan of the Polish veterans then you’ll have a fair idea of what to… Continue Reading →

Crucified Mortals – Psalms Of The Dead Choir (Hells Headbangers)

Another ripping thrash album tears your ears to shreds and ensures a course of treatment at the osteopath. This is the second album from Cleveland, Ohio’s Crucified Mortals and the long awaited follow up to 2011’s self-titled debut. For those… Continue Reading →

Ruins – Undercurrent (Listenable Records)

Now, I’m no expert in black metal (or anything else for that matter) but I know a bit and I know what I like. Few black metal bands ‘do it’ for me to be honest, they either sound like they’ve… Continue Reading →
