Having been bollocked by my old man for breaking his antique ‘stereogram’ with Ozzy’s ‘Bark At The Moon’ in 1984, I decided a life of metal worship was for me!
Likewise, after watching Zombie Flesheaters as a kid (early 80’s pre certification combined with an easily had over mum) and convincing myself that a zombie was more than likely in my wardrobe all night – a long and turbulent love affair with horror began. And I say turbulent as I regularly upset my horror geek mates by telling them Argento’s movies are all overrated shite. (You’d think they’d caught me fingering their mum when I tell them that).
I’m a big fan of thrash, death metal, and er….. proper 80’s poodle rock (love you Ratt) and Motorhead are the best band in the world.
Not a fan of tinny ‘recorded on a mono tape deck….. in a biscuit tin…… in the woods’ kvlt black metal.

Escarnium – Interitus (Testimony Records)

I’ve never heard any of Escarnium’s previous material but that is gonna change after living with this album for a while. Forming in 2008, the Brazilian quartet has only released one previous album and a couple of EPs and splits. … Continue Reading →

Hobbs’ Angel Of Death – Heaven Bled (Hells Headbangers)

1988. What were you doing then? Well I guess there’s a good chance some of you weren’t even born. Me? I was seventeen years old and obsessed with thrash metal. Far too much money was spent on vinyl (all of… Continue Reading →

Brujeria – Pocho Aztlan (Nuclear Blast)

16 years on from their second LP ‘Brujerizmo’ the masked, machete wielding, satanic Mexican bandidos are back and on top form with ‘Pocho Aztlan’. I’ve always been a fan of Brujeria, regardless of who was behind the masks. I remember… Continue Reading →

Pain – Coming Home (Nuclear Blast)

A lot of metal fans are a quite dismissive of Pain. I’ve heard Peter Tägtgren’s (pretty much) one man band as ‘cheesy industrial electro-rock’, a sort of ‘Rammstein-lite’ or ‘I Can’t Believe It’s Not Kovenant ’. Now if you’re one… Continue Reading →

Johansson & Speckmann – Edge Of The Abyss (Soulseller)

If you look up “Busy motherfucker” in the Oxford English Dictionary, chances are you’ll be confronted by a photo of Swedish guitar lord Rogga Johansson. This bloke is in so many bands he makes Shane Embury look like a workshy… Continue Reading →

Vader – Iron Times (Nuclear Blast)

Long before Nergal & Behemoth were poncing around on stages wearing funny helmets and make up, Vader were the standard bearers of Polish extreme metal. They are the constantly touring diehards of the death metal trenches and have been consistent… Continue Reading →

Hellbringer – Awakened From The Abyss (High Roller)

Imagine, if you will that back in 1984 Slayer didn’t release the ‘Haunting The Chapel’ EP. Instead they sacked Tom Araya and hired Cronos’ even more pissed off twin brother in his absence. This is the album that would have… Continue Reading →

Evil Spirit – Cauldron Messiah (Terror From Hell Records)

Let’s start at the intro – ‘Him The Almighty Power’.  Almighty he may be, however in this instance he sounds like a rambling and no doubt cider addled ‘Harry Ramp’ warbling on about fuck knows what before seguing into what,… Continue Reading →

Epidemia – Leprocomio (Satanath Records)

When the boss said he was sending me two South American death metal albums from an underground Russian label to review I won’t lie to you, I did groan a bit. I’d not heard of either band nor had I… Continue Reading →

Evil Reborn – Throne Of Insanity (Satanath Records)

So here we have the debut LP from a South American death metal crew, released on a Russian label and being blasted out here in sunny Colchester. Talk about diversity in action! Evil Reborn is a Venezuelan band that formed… Continue Reading →

Demonbreed – Where Gods Come To Die (Testimony Records)

Right, hands up who’s heard of Demonbreed? No you haven’t, stop lying. This is soon to change as these Germans have delivered a superb mouldering, maggot-ridden slab of old school death metal meat with this, their debut album. It’s a… Continue Reading →

Diabolical – Umbra (ViciSolum)

Swedish progressive death metallers Diabolical have returned after a three year gap since their last LP ‘Neogenesis’ with this four track EP ‘Umbra’. Now I’m not overly familiar with Diabolical’s material and I do tend to like my death metal… Continue Reading →
