Having been introduced to metal by my older brother (who was an 80s thrasher with a love for NWOBHM), I caught the metal bug by association from a very early age. My tastes have changed a lot over the years, beginning with Metallica and Iron Maiden and culminating in just about everything extreme and underground. My main loves are slimy/occult death metal, teeth-grinding/neck-rending thrash, frostbitten black metal, crushing doom and blasting grindcore – what’s not to love there? I’ve worked in the music industry as a music buyer for an online retailer for the best part of 10 years so have a wide range of knowledge of most genres of music, but metal has always been my bag. I’ve also been writing on and off about metal for many years now, reviewing for various zines including a stint with Ave Noctum’s previous incarnation as Metal Team UK. I’ve always loved to tout out the underground metal scene like some filth dealer in an Amsterdam back street (but without the STDs). In my spare time I like to add good shit to my ever growing and unstable CD collection, dabble in smelly vinyl and dust off my dubbed tapes from my trading days, hoping with clenched bum that they aren’t inexplicably chewed to buggery. I’m born and bred in Oxfordshire, have Danish ancestry, like shit jokes, play guitar fast, like my beer cold (unless I’m on ales, in which case – don’t mind) and can usually be found dressed in all black with an unreadable logo emblazoned across my chest.

Aborym – Dirty (Agonia)

Aborym have been consistently delivering the goods for a surprisingly long time now, haven’t they? It only really struck me when coming to write this review, that it was 2001 when I first had my introduction to the band with… Continue Reading →

Torture Killer – Phobia (Dynamic Arts)

A stark black and white image greets me upon looking at the cover art of the new Torture Killer album, quite a transformation in style to their previous couple of albums which had bold colours on great artwork to create… Continue Reading →

Eternal Rest – Prophetic (Deepsend)

This is the debut album from Australian death metal crew Eternal Rest, though judging by the proficiency of their songwriting and the impressive way they can musically slap you about the face to get your attention, you’d think these guys… Continue Reading →

Bulletbelt – Down In The Cold Of The Grave (Headless Horseman)

I’ll admit that I’m not particularly familiar with the metal scene in New Zealand at all. From memory I can only name three Kiwi bands that I’ve experienced the music of (those being Diocletian, Ulcerate and Dawn of Azazel). I… Continue Reading →

Intöxicated – Rock ‘n Roll Hellpatröl (Hells Headbangers)

Germany’s Intöxicated (the umlaut making all the difference) are all about the leather, sluts, speed metal, intoxication, wanking and generally turning everything to 11. Who can argue with such a huge array of popular interests? This is the band’s debut… Continue Reading →

Kingdom – Morbid Priest of Supreme Blasphemy (Hellthrasher Productions)

“Morbid Priest of Supreme Blasphemy”… FUCK YEAH! Now that’s a death metal album title if ever I heard one. Polish death metal crew Kingdom do not fuck around with their album titles, or their music for that matter. However, these… Continue Reading →

Darktrance – Pessimum (Bad Mood Man)

Darktrance is the project of sole member Deimos (also of Cold Resistance and Dargoth), a Ukrainian dark metal band which was created in 2007. ‘Pessimum’ is the projects third album, purveying a twisted brand of doomy dark metal that brims… Continue Reading →

Severe Mutilation – Spawn of Hatred (Khaosmaster)

I always find it a good sign when you check out a CDs artwork, and feel reassured that you’re going to enjoy what you’re about to hear. Perhaps I’m easily swayed, but I have been known to purchase an album… Continue Reading →

Ars Macabra – III (Odium Records)

My last taste of Italians Ars Macabra was back in 2009 when I discovered their 2nd album ‘Hate Induced Trance’ having been sent it for review. I loved their balls out enthusiasm for wanting to play the most angry, blasting… Continue Reading →

Battle Dagorath – Cursed Storm of Ages (ATMF)

My last experience of Battle Dagorath was their debut album, which I gave a glowing review to back in the ‘ye olde Metal Team UK’ days. I was drawn in by their epic, Emperor-like soundscapes, and their unabashed love of… Continue Reading →

F.K.Ü. – 4: Rise of the Mosh Mongers (Napalm)

F.K.Ü. (that’s Freddy Kruger’s Ünderwear to the uninitiated!) return once more for their fourth album of crazy, horror inspired fun thrash metal (let’s face it – their lyrics were never going to be pondering deep meaningful issues or attempting to… Continue Reading →

Slecht – Transient (Unlight Productions)

My last experience of Belgians Slecht wasn’t a particularly inspiring one, as I reviewed their very first demo “Triumph of Death” around 6 years ago for Metal Team UK. The fact I didn’t recall a lot about it is explained… Continue Reading →
