Having been introduced to metal by my older brother (who was an 80s thrasher with a love for NWOBHM), I caught the metal bug by association from a very early age. My tastes have changed a lot over the years, beginning with Metallica and Iron Maiden and culminating in just about everything extreme and underground. My main loves are slimy/occult death metal, teeth-grinding/neck-rending thrash, frostbitten black metal, crushing doom and blasting grindcore – what’s not to love there? I’ve worked in the music industry as a music buyer for an online retailer for the best part of 10 years so have a wide range of knowledge of most genres of music, but metal has always been my bag. I’ve also been writing on and off about metal for many years now, reviewing for various zines including a stint with Ave Noctum’s previous incarnation as Metal Team UK. I’ve always loved to tout out the underground metal scene like some filth dealer in an Amsterdam back street (but without the STDs). In my spare time I like to add good shit to my ever growing and unstable CD collection, dabble in smelly vinyl and dust off my dubbed tapes from my trading days, hoping with clenched bum that they aren’t inexplicably chewed to buggery. I’m born and bred in Oxfordshire, have Danish ancestry, like shit jokes, play guitar fast, like my beer cold (unless I’m on ales, in which case – don’t mind) and can usually be found dressed in all black with an unreadable logo emblazoned across my chest.

Code – Augur Nox (Agonia Records)

It’s been a while since I last caught up with Code, though this was not through lack of a good impression made by their 2005 debut ‘Nouveau Gloaming’ – far from it in fact as it was a truly great… Continue Reading →

Convulse – Evil Prevails (Svart)

Convulse are a band with quite the history. They started out as an 80s speed metal band under the moniker S.D.S., before changing their name to Convulse, releasing arguably one of the best known Finnish death metal albums from the… Continue Reading →

WAN – Enjoy The Filth (Carnal Records)

WAN do not fuck about. This is the Swedes 2nd album after 2010’s ‘Wolves of the North’, and damn will it erode your ear drums. In simple terms, what we have here is just over 30 minutes of noisy prototypical… Continue Reading →

Craven Idol – Towards Eschaton (Dark Descent)

Damn! Now that’s a piece of cover art! The very first thing that drew me in to Craven Idol was the beautiful work of Paolo Girardi certainly, but taking into consideration the fact that they’ve hooked up with Dark Descent… Continue Reading →

King Fear – Frostbite (Quality Steel Records)

King Fear is a relatively new project formed by Nachtgarm (of Negator, and recently filling in for Dark Funeral on vocals). Before this, their debut full length album, they had released only a single EP in 2012. Although there is… Continue Reading →

Ferocity – The Sovereign (Deepsend)

Denmark has had its fair share of death metal bands over the years, but none of which have really risen to the heights of their Swedish (or even Norwegian, in my opinion) brethren. OK, Invocator were great, as were Iniquity… Continue Reading →

Demonical – Darkness Unbound (Cyclone Empire)

Sometimes the passage of time seems to pass extremely quickly. I mean, it seems like only yesterday that Swedish crew Centinex were consistently delivering excellent Swedish death metal, and I lamented their loss just as much as the next slave… Continue Reading →

Hybris – Heavy Machinery (Candlelight)

Forming in 2010, Hybris already have quite the pedigree in the UK metal scene. This is due to the fact their members consist of former members of sludge monsters Centurions Ghost, a former member from classic heavy metal crew Stuka… Continue Reading →

Grave Miasma – Odori Sepulcrorum (Sepulchral Voice)

It’s still surprising to me that this is Grave Miasma’s debut full length album, seeing as I (like many others) was completely imbued with the sickness of their two EPs which preceded this. Originally forming under the name Goat Molestör… Continue Reading →

Diskord – Doomscapes / Aural Abjection (Hellthrasher Productions)

Diskord hail from Norway, and have had an unflinching penchant for blasting out dissonant, progressive and downright weird death metal since forming in 1999. Having released their second album ‘Dystopics’ on the ‘No Posers Please!’ label in 2012, Diskord’s debut… Continue Reading →

Averse Concept – Symbol of Loss (SR)

Well, this certainly flipped the script on me. On the surface of things, this was to be just a regular common or garden black metal release for reviewing, which upon listening to I would be washed away in a sea… Continue Reading →

Throne of Heresy – Realms of Desecration (SR)

Throne of Heresy are relative newcomers to the world of death metal, only forming in late 2009. However, they’ve already popped their album cherry with 2012’s ‘The Stench of Deceit’, and are quick to follow up with this short taster… Continue Reading →
