Author Lars Christiansen

Having been introduced to metal by my older brother (who was an 80s thrasher with a love for NWOBHM), I caught the metal bug by association from a very early age. My tastes have changed a lot over the years, beginning with Metallica and Iron Maiden and culminating in just about everything extreme and underground. My main loves are slimy/occult death metal, teeth-grinding/neck-rending thrash, frostbitten black metal, crushing doom and blasting grindcore – what’s not to love there? I’ve worked in the music industry as a music buyer for an online retailer for the best part of 10 years so have a wide range of knowledge of most genres of music, but metal has always been my bag. I’ve also been writing on and off about metal for many years now, reviewing for various zines including a stint with Ave Noctum’s previous incarnation as Metal Team UK. I’ve always loved to tout out the underground metal scene like some filth dealer in an Amsterdam back street (but without the STDs). In my spare time I like to add good shit to my ever growing and unstable CD collection, dabble in smelly vinyl and dust off my dubbed tapes from my trading days, hoping with clenched bum that they aren’t inexplicably chewed to buggery. I’m born and bred in Oxfordshire, have Danish ancestry, like shit jokes, play guitar fast, like my beer cold (unless I’m on ales, in which case – don’t mind) and can usually be found dressed in all black with an unreadable logo emblazoned across my chest.

Woe Unto Me – A Step Into The Waters Of Forgetfulness (Solitude)

I’ve yet to decide if the guys at Solitude Productions are a miserable bunch of bastards, or built with a psyche that is stronger than tempered steel. They’ve been responsible for releasing some of the most cripplingly bleak, depression inducing… Continue Reading →

Lost Society – Terror Hungry (Nuclear Blast)

It was less than a year ago that I was singing the praises of Finland’s Lost Society, with their debut album being filled as it was with youthful exuberance, neck snapping speeds, tenacious song writing and most importantly – fun…. Continue Reading →

Interview – Nocturnal

With their third full length album hitting the shelves recently, what better time to hear from German black/thrashers Nocturnal. Riding high once again on a wave of Teutonic vitriol, neck snapping riffage and a fine back catalogue, Ave Noctum caught… Continue Reading →

Chordewa – Recast Gear For The Mindcraft (Haarbn)

I’m pretty certain this is the first Moldovan band I’ve ever wrapped my ears around, and what a belter it is too. For a debut album, and hailing from a country that isn’t exactly teeming with metal related bounty, this… Continue Reading →

Profezia – Oracolo Suicida (Moribund)

There isn’t a massive amount of information about on Profezia, they’re far too kvlt for that. However, what I have managed to cobble together is that it’s mainly the project of Kvasir (also of Italians Abhor) these days, although in… Continue Reading →

Arrogant Destruktor – Hate Legions Ride! (S/R)

Featuring Anaal Nathrakh drummer Steve Powell on session drums, and roping in Carl Stokes of Cancer to record and mix this, ‘Hate Legions Ride!’ sees the triumphant return of Birmingham’s two piece black metal hate squad Arrogant Destruktor. Instantly picking… Continue Reading →

Nocturnal – Storming Evil (High Roller)

One sign of becoming an old bastard is repeatedly referring to ‘time flying’ – something I find myself regularly writing and saying over recent years. But, with that said; time really does fly doesn’t it? I mean, it only seems… Continue Reading →

Stilla – Ensamhetens Andar (Nordvis)

Hot on the heels of their debut album ‘Till Stilla Falla’ (which I reviewed here slightly less than a year ago) come’s Stilla’s second album of eclectic black metal greatness. Hailing from Sweden and with members of Armagedda, Deranged and… Continue Reading →

The Dead Goats – Children of the Fungus (Instant Classic)

Forming in 2011, Polish three piece The Dead Goats is made up of members of blackened/deathly crew Abused Majesty, as well as Neuropathia (the prolific purveyors of quality death grind). This is only the second release from this relatively new… Continue Reading →

Iskald – Nedom og Nord (Indie)

‘Nedom og Nord’ is the latest album from Norwegian melodic black metal crew Iskald (with Iskald roughly translating to ‘Ice cold’ – but you probably worked that out anyway). This is their fourth foray into full length album territory, and… Continue Reading →

Waldgeflüster – Meine Fesseln (Bindrune Recordings)

Waldgeflüster (‘Forest Whispers’ for non-fluent German speakers like myself who were worried about having their err… ‘waldges’ flustered), started out as being the solo black metal project of multi-instrumentalist Winterherz in 2005. This is his third full length album, featuring… Continue Reading →

Woebegone Obscured – Marrow of Dreams (I, Voidhanger)

With cover art featuring a joyously glowing daisy, you’d be forgiven for thinking this album was some kind of hippie chillout extravaganza had it not been for the fact you are currently perusing Ave Noctum. Of course, reality is far… Continue Reading →
