I've been into metal for the greater part of my existence. Exposed from a young age to bands like AC/DC, Iron Maiden and Faith no More, my tastes gravitated towards the heavier end of the spectrum (if I conveniently bypass Skid Row and Mley Cr・...) – first through hearing the likes of Megadeth, Anthrax and Metallica, and then via Pantera, Sepultura and Slayer. In my teenage quest for the heaviest, most unpleasant music imaginable, two old copies of Thrash 'n Burn magazine and a second-hand copy of Eaten Back to Life around 1996 proved defining. Later I discovered Terrorizer and more importantly, some good mail order companies. Death metal rapidly became my favourite musical form and has remained so ever since. Due to life distracting from my ability to keep up-to-date with the genre, I am thankful that writing for this website allows me to indulge my musical needs. As well as the aforementioned bands/genre, I'm also very partial to some rock, punk, thrash and black metal.

Vainaja – Kadotetut (Svart)

Authors of just one release so far – 2011’s ‘Kahleiden Kantaja’ single – you could hardly call Vainaja a prolific act. Furthermore, the Finns are in fact rather mysterious, consisting of three members known simply as The Gravedigger (drums), The… Continue Reading →

Entrapment – Lamentations of the Flesh (Soulseller)

Two years ago I received an album with sublime, orange artwork and music to make my ears bleed. The band: Holland’s Entrapment or, more precisely, Michel Jonker’s Entrapment. Predominantly a one-man project, he, with a little help from some friends… Continue Reading →

God Seed – Luxembourg City, Den Atelier 07/05/14

When it was announced that God Seed would be playing this small corner of the world, I was mildly astonished. Supporting a more established albeit very different metal band (Cult Of Luna) naturally helped a great deal to get the… Continue Reading →

Archspire – The Lucid Collective (Season of Mist)

These Canadian technical death metal merchants began life in 2007 under the name Defenestrated; a name which I assume was influenced by the first Cryptopsy album. Shifting monicker to Archspire in 2009, the band eventually released its debut ‘All Shall… Continue Reading →

Autopsy – Tourniquets, Hacksaws and Graves (Peaceville)

It seems like just last year that I received the new Autopsy album to metaphorically gush over. Oh, what’s that you say? It was just last year?! Well I’ll be blown (again, metaphorically): just a matter of months ago, these… Continue Reading →

Decapitated Christ – Arcane Impurity Ceremonies (FDA Rekotz)

It’s funny that the cover art to this one immediately reminded me of Impiety’s ‘Skullfucking Armageddon’, as Decapitated Christ are self-confessed fans of those Singaporean nuts. Over the course of three albums, this Spanish five-piece has (apparently) made it its… Continue Reading →

Winter Of Sin – Violence Reigns Supreme (Cyclone Empire)

Active since 1998, this Dutch entity now finds itself in rather a unique position. Not only does it boast two members of the much missed God Dethroned amongst its ranks but one of whom is Mr Dethroned himself, Henri ‘the… Continue Reading →

Tortorum – Katabasis (W.T.C.)

Consisting of members with three different nationalities, Tortorum proves one thing: that for all its negativity and anti-humanism, the sound of True Norwegian Black Metal can be a unifying force. Barghest (England) and Skyggen (Poland) – creators of this Bergen-based… Continue Reading →

Entartung – Peccata Mortalia (W.T.C.)

Consisting of two stalwarts of the European black metal scene – namely Lykormas and Vulfolaic (which other band(s) they have been in is shrouded in mystery…) –  Entartung now finds itself on album number two. A quick scan of online… Continue Reading →

Hail Of Bullets, Ichor, Desdemonia, Trier Exhaus, 06/03/14

A gig at an inconvenient point of the week. What are you gonna do: not go and forever hold your grudge or make the effort and exacerbate the misery of your looming day at work? In the case of HOB… Continue Reading →

Morbus Chron – Sweven (Century Media)

So, Morbus Chron, a name which has been firmly embedding itself in the underground metal community’s consciousness over the last few years. As with so many bands that I’ve covered lately, they have until now just been a name for… Continue Reading →

Words Of Farewell – The Black Wild Yonder (AFM)

Now I must say, I took a bit of a punt on this one when it became available for review. ‘Why not try something a bit different?’ I thought. After all, a bit of variation once in a while does… Continue Reading →
