I've been into metal for the greater part of my existence. Exposed from a young age to bands like AC/DC, Iron Maiden and Faith no More, my tastes gravitated towards the heavier end of the spectrum (if I conveniently bypass Skid Row and Mley Cr・...) – first through hearing the likes of Megadeth, Anthrax and Metallica, and then via Pantera, Sepultura and Slayer. In my teenage quest for the heaviest, most unpleasant music imaginable, two old copies of Thrash 'n Burn magazine and a second-hand copy of Eaten Back to Life around 1996 proved defining. Later I discovered Terrorizer and more importantly, some good mail order companies. Death metal rapidly became my favourite musical form and has remained so ever since. Due to life distracting from my ability to keep up-to-date with the genre, I am thankful that writing for this website allows me to indulge my musical needs. As well as the aforementioned bands/genre, I'm also very partial to some rock, punk, thrash and black metal.

Cannibal Corpse – A Skeletal Domain (Metal Blade)

As I’m sure has been the case for thousands of other fans, Cannibal Corpse was the band that truly roped me into the death metal genre. Chancing upon a second hand copy of their debut ‘Eaten Back to Life’ –… Continue Reading →

Funereus – Return of the Old Goat (Forever Plagued)

Formed in their native Mexico five years ago and currently residing in California, the barbarians of Funereus have been perfecting their craft with a few demos, EPs and splits, not to mention 2010’s debut album ‘Profane Rite of Morbid Glorification’…. Continue Reading →

Dhwesha – Sthoopa (Dunkelheit)

Meaning ‘hatred/revenge’ in the band’s native language, Kannada, the Indians of Dhwesha have been gradually gearing up for their debut album since 2008. Incorporating the members’ interest in their culture’s history and mythology, it seems pretty fair to say that… Continue Reading →

Sacrocurse – Unholier Master (Hell’s Headbangers)

Formed in 2012 as a Mexican-Turkish alliance, Sacrocurse’s sole aim was to lay waste to metal’s most bestial underground hordes. This they seemingly did with the ‘Sulphur Blessing’ demo in 2013, followed by a split with Canada’s Trajeto de Cabro…. Continue Reading →

Drowned – Idola Specus (Sepulchral Voice)

Drowned has been gearing up to release its debut record for an awfully long time. Formed in Berlin way back in 1992, they have thus far released seven demos and one EP over a twenty-year period spanning from 1993-2013. In… Continue Reading →

Airbourne – Rockhal, Esch/Alzette, Luxembourg 17/07/14

Ah, the return of Airbourne. In a little over four years they’ve hit this particular venue as many times. The last time I caught them was the second of these occasions in late 2010 on the ‘No Guts, No Glory’… Continue Reading →

Voodoo Gods – Anticipation for Blood Leveled in Darkness (Saturnal)

Formed in 2001 by Alex Voodoo, Seth Van de Loo (Severe Torture) and Tony Norman (ex-Monstrosity/Morbid Angel/Terrorizer), Voodoo Gods has seen a revolving line-up of famous extreme metal legends pass through its doors. Only one EP has so far seen… Continue Reading →

Unaussprechlichen Kulten – Baphomet Pan Shub-Niggurath (Iron Bonehead)

With a moniker like that, you’d expect a Germanic entity to be behind ‘Baphomet Pan Shub-Niggurath’. Instead, Unaussprechlichten Kulten are a Chilean mob inspired by an H.P. Lovecraft story of the same name. As I have no familiarity with the… Continue Reading →

Abaddon Incarnate – Pessimist (Candlelight)

Personally, it came as a bit of a surprise to discover that Abaddon Incarnate were releasing a new album. Unaware that they were still going, my last point of contact with the band was 2004’s ‘Dark Crusade’. While an extremely… Continue Reading →

Under The Church – ST (Pulverised)

Following the reformation (2007) and dissolution (2012) of ancient Swedish death metal entity Nirvana 2002, two of its members found their creative impulses unspent. Minus previous band mate Orvar Säfström, bassist Lars Henriksson and drummer Erik Qvick decided to create… Continue Reading →

Killchain – Where Is Your Saviour (Metal Age)

Slovakia’s Killchain have been plying their death metal trade since 2005, originally focussing on sounds of the old school. Along the way they’ve played with bands as diverse as Exhumed, Gorgoroth, Cynic and released two albums. Perhaps inspired by the… Continue Reading →

Gluttony – Beyond the Veil of Flesh (Vic)

Formed in 2009 and featuring a number of musicians from Swedish deathsters My Own Grave, Gluttony entered into existence purely to make Swedish death metal as it “sounded back in the day”. A less than novel objective in this day… Continue Reading →
