I've been into metal for the greater part of my existence. Exposed from a young age to bands like AC/DC, Iron Maiden and Faith no More, my tastes gravitated towards the heavier end of the spectrum (if I conveniently bypass Skid Row and Mley Cr・...) – first through hearing the likes of Megadeth, Anthrax and Metallica, and then via Pantera, Sepultura and Slayer. In my teenage quest for the heaviest, most unpleasant music imaginable, two old copies of Thrash 'n Burn magazine and a second-hand copy of Eaten Back to Life around 1996 proved defining. Later I discovered Terrorizer and more importantly, some good mail order companies. Death metal rapidly became my favourite musical form and has remained so ever since. Due to life distracting from my ability to keep up-to-date with the genre, I am thankful that writing for this website allows me to indulge my musical needs. As well as the aforementioned bands/genre, I'm also very partial to some rock, punk, thrash and black metal.

Born From Pain – Dance With the Devil (BDHW/Soulfood)

Formed in 1997, the Dutchmen of Born From Pain have made it their mission to merge the forces of metal – thrash and death – with hardcore. Over the course of six albums they have made a name for themselves,… Continue Reading →

Soulburn – The Suffocating Darkness (Century Media)

Soulburn is the band originally formed by Asphyx legends Eric Daniels and Bob Bagchus back in the ’90s. Rounded out with vocalist/bassist Wannes Gubbels their debut record, 1998’s ‘Feeding on Angels’, sounded so similar to Asphyx that the same line-up… Continue Reading →

Horrendous – Ecdysis (Dark Descent)

When the reviews list containing this came in, I had no idea of who Horrendous were. So imagine the guilt I felt upon learning that numerous AN contributors – who evidently did have an idea – were clamouring for it…. Continue Reading →

Resistance – The Seeds Within (Pavement)

Formed in 2004 as a metal influenced hardcore band, the Belgians of Resistance have gradually morphed their music from that genre to more of an extreme metal realm. Five albums in now, ‘The Seeds Within’ is described by the band’s… Continue Reading →

Absentia Lunae – Vorwarts (ATMF)

Authors of two previous albums, Italy’s Absentia Lunae (AL for this review) have been haunting the black metal scene since 2002. Album number three, ‘Vorwarts’ – apparently meaning “forward, never look back” – is my introduction to the band. Where… Continue Reading →

Obituary – Inked in Blood (Relapse)

It’s been five long years since Obituary’s last album ‘Darkest Day’ emerged to whack us round our skulls. In the meantime there’s been a fair amount of disruption in the band’s ranks. First Frank Watkins abandoned his bass role, defecting… Continue Reading →

Witchmaster – Antichristus Ex Utero (Osmose)

Poland has long been a source of consistently executed extreme metal, and like an emblem of this phenomenon is Witchmaster. Formed by band founder Geryon in 1996, today’s line-up includes Reyash of Christ Agony/Vader fame and the return of drumming… Continue Reading →

Interview – Execration

For those who misguidedly believe death metal to be a one dimensional form of music I present Norway’s Execration. Their third album, the aptly titled ‘Morbid Dimensions’, blew me away when I received it for review a couple of weeks… Continue Reading →

Revocation – Deathless (Metal Blade)

The Boston, Massachusetts band Revocation have been around for a number of years now. I recall first seeing their name in a copy of Terrorizer – probably around the time they started – and being taken with their decidedly old… Continue Reading →

Execration – Morbid Dimensions (Duplicate)

These Norwegians are already the proud fathers of two previous experimental death metal releases – 2008’s ‘Syndicates of Lethargy’ and 2011’s ‘Odes of the Occult’. Having missed the pleasure of both these, ‘Morbid Dimensions’ is my introduction to the group…. Continue Reading →

Decapitated – Blood Mantra (Nuclear Blast)

Where to begin with Decapitated? From their explosion on to the death metal landscape around the millennium and resultant praise from all corners of the metal press, the Poles went on a seemingly unstoppable upward trajectory over the course of… Continue Reading →

Deathronation – Hallow the Dead (Van)

These Germans appear to have had a bit of a tumultuous past: starting out in 2004, releasing two EPs, splitting up (losing members with names like Randy Rots in the process) and reforming. But alas, after ten years of waiting… Continue Reading →
