I've been into metal for the greater part of my existence. Exposed from a young age to bands like AC/DC, Iron Maiden and Faith no More, my tastes gravitated towards the heavier end of the spectrum (if I conveniently bypass Skid Row and Mley Cr・...) – first through hearing the likes of Megadeth, Anthrax and Metallica, and then via Pantera, Sepultura and Slayer. In my teenage quest for the heaviest, most unpleasant music imaginable, two old copies of Thrash 'n Burn magazine and a second-hand copy of Eaten Back to Life around 1996 proved defining. Later I discovered Terrorizer and more importantly, some good mail order companies. Death metal rapidly became my favourite musical form and has remained so ever since. Due to life distracting from my ability to keep up-to-date with the genre, I am thankful that writing for this website allows me to indulge my musical needs. As well as the aforementioned bands/genre, I'm also very partial to some rock, punk, thrash and black metal.

Hate Eternal – Infernus (Season of Mist)

It doesn’t feel all that long ago that Hate Eternal’s debut came out, although scarily it’s been sixteen years. Evolving into a technical, stream-lined and über brutal death metal unit along the way, there have been some ups and downs…. Continue Reading →

Wombbath – Downfall Rising (Dark Descent)

Twenty-two years after their brilliant debut ‘Internal Caustic Torments’ arrived, at long last Sweden’s Wombbath are back with another slab of unadulterated death metal. Perhaps what distinguished these guys from many of their native contemporaries was the clear homage to… Continue Reading →

Interview – Cut Up

As with so many of the cool opportunities contributing to Ave Noctum has afforded me, interviewing a former Vomitory member is something my younger self could never have envisaged. Asking man mountain Ulf Dalegren to sign my CD back in… Continue Reading →

Tim “Ripper” Owens – Norwich Waterfront, 18/07/15

Tim “Ripper” Owens: former Judas Priest front-man, and an awesome one at that – especially live. It’s hard to comprehend then how on this Saturday night his gig at Norwich’s Waterfront managed to attract just seventy people. As the frontman… Continue Reading →

Interview – DiabolicuM

When it comes to Sweden’s industrial/black metal pioneers Diabolicum, and especially their rampaging latest disc ‘Ia Pazuzu’, utterly negative adjectives are all that can describe them. Given the opportunity to pick the brains of founding member Sasrof, it came as… Continue Reading →

Deathhammer – Evil Power (Hell’s Headbangers)

Formed in 2005, the Norwegian duo of Deathhammer – Sergeant Salsten and Sadomancer – have slowly but surely been building a reputation for themselves. Signed to the excellent Hell’s Headbangers in time for 2012’s ‘Onward to the Pits’, that album… Continue Reading →

Turbocharged – Militant (GFY Productions)

Turbocharged’s leader Ronnie “Ripper” Olson was the bass player on a few of Gehenna’s ’90s releases and, more significantly for myself, the vocalist/bassist on Vomitory’s early creations including their mighty debut. It seems a strange coincidence then that just last… Continue Reading →

Paganus Doctrina – Omnipotense Aeternae Diabolous (Ashen Productions)

Since they have been in existence in one form or another, on-and-off since 1995, you might expect that the characters involved with Paganus Doctrina would have released an album by now. But in fact ‘Omnipotense Aeternae Diabolous’ is their debut…. Continue Reading →

Cut Up – Forensic Nightmares (Metal Blade)

Vomitory were a band I first got blown away by when they played with Cannibal Corpse at the Camden Underworld in 2000, in support of their excellent ‘Redemption’ album. Although I stopped shelling out for their CDs some years back,… Continue Reading →

Motörhead, Rockhal Box, Esch/Alzette, Luxembourg 23/06/15

After the experience of last week’s Judas Priest gig, I’d be lying if I said I had any confidence that tonight’s crowd would be any better. But from the get-go, there was a tangible air of excitement among the masses… Continue Reading →

Judas Priest, Rockhal Box, Esch/Alzette, Luxembourg (16/06/15)

The return of Judas Priest to Luxembourg was, as you might expect, an exciting prospect. Once their support act – who on the night proved even more redundant than expected – was announced, that excitement dissipated somewhat. Still, Judas Priest… Continue Reading →

Absconditus – Kατάβασις (I, Voidhanger)

With bands who I never knew existed, my default reaction is to scan The Metal Archives for insight. In the case of France’s Absconditus, however, the unusually sparse promotional notes with ‘Kατάβασις’ turned out to be as good as it… Continue Reading →
