Author The Flaneur

The Flâneur is my writing pseudonym. I don't think my name matters here, and in fact, I don't want it to play a part in how my reviews are interpreted. Not that anyone would do that, right?
I've been listening mainly to black metal, goth, experimental and associated genres since c. 2007, so I guess that qualifies me to give my opinions on the Internet. I also have two Art History degrees, but whatever.
If I give anything other than Evilfeast, Vampirska, Darkspace, or Trhä (or similar) an 8+ rating, you have a reason to suspect my integrity.

Sarvekas – Woven Dark Paths (Soulseller Records)

Sarvekas’s debut opus Woven Dark Paths has been making the rounds in the black metal circles recently, to numerous accolades. That’s why, dear reader, I decided to give it a spin, and let my extremely biased opinion dissect it. But… Continue Reading →

Mesarthim – Arrival (Avantgarde Music)

A jubilant explosion rolls across time and space. It’s the new Mesarthim. Now, Mesarthim has never been ‘trve kvlt’, and it’s been a long time since the Australian enigma has restrained itself to strictly mysterious and/or sorrowful melodies. In this… Continue Reading →

Hyl – Where Emptiness Is All (Odium Records)

When I listened to the sample to Where Emptiness Is All, I was so intrigued I think I responded to the call out within 5 minutes. Now, over a month later, I’m still dragging my feet over concluding a review… Continue Reading →

Esoctrilihum – Astraal Constellations Of The Majickal Zodiac (I, Voidhanger)

How does one begin to write about Esoctrilihum? Well, by mentioning the project’s, nay, its label I, Voidhanger’s, album covers, of course. Where else to start? Vibrant esoteric album art is a staple marketing tactic for I, Voidhanger releases –… Continue Reading →

Vaultwraith- Decomposing Spells (Hell’s Headbangers)

Ah, Vaultwraith. My favourite trve kvlt metal genre mixed up with my least favourite (only because power metal does not even figure on the chart). I expected this to be less groovy and more epic. Perhaps, my perception has been… Continue Reading →

Argenthorns – The Ravening (Avantgarde Music)

Oh man. That’s it, that’s the review. In all seriousness, I don’t know what else to add. This is a perfect album. You want more? Sure, let me see. Creepy synths? Check. Perfectly shrieky vocals enmeshed with cavernous soliloquys? Check… Continue Reading →

Wild Beyond – Wild Beyond (Gates Of Hell)

I took this album on, on the expectation of something grandiose, or at least morbidly pleasant. The sample sounded promising. I won’t lie, my curiosity got the best of me. It might have also been because the band name is… Continue Reading →
