Once described (not inaccurately) as “strangely akin to a whack on the head”, I’m basically a cider-fuelled hobbit crossed with a glittery retrogoth Care Bear. Raised on an eclectic mix of English and Irish folk, Enya, The Beatles and a lot of old-school reggae; rock and metal happened to me in 1998, in the form of three life-changing albums: Mechanical Animals, Without You I’m Nothing, and Cruelty and the Beast. From there I ended up knocking around the Midlands unsigned scene, before getting talked into my first Download in 2006. The festival habit stuck, and over the course of more drunken weekends than I care to (or can) remember, I discovered the joys of folk, black, post, industrial and weird/niche metal in general (I blame Damnation for that last one). With the notable exceptions of Metallica and a bit of Maiden, I mostly bypassed the more mainstream metal bands, but I can talk your ear off about the likes of Alcest, Godflesh, Darkthrone, Satyricon, Orphaned Land, Årabrot, The Kovenant, amongst others. Non-metal favourites include Nouvelle Vague, Hatari, The Andrews Sisters and Janelle Monáe, so there’s a bit of pretty much everything lurking on my Spotify. Did a lot of press in a previous life, the pinnacle of which was watching Twisted Sister at Bloodstock with the slightly less wasted half of Korpiklaani. At a gig, can usually be found at the bar, making new friends in the ladies and/or smoking area, or getting a better view than you on the disabled platform.

Ershetu – Yomi (Debemur Morti)

Towards the end of last year, I found myself reviewing what was easily the strangest album (I use the term loosely, quite frankly) I’ve encountered in many a long year. It wasn’t an album in the traditional sense, but rather… Continue Reading →

Master Boot Record – Hardwarez (Metal Blade)

One of the many things I love about the musical output of Victor Love is that it never ceases to amaze me what one man and his computer can get up to. It’s like that quote from Doctor Who, only… Continue Reading →

Eihwar – Viking War Trance (Season of Mist)

Reviewing albums in a half-decent fashion, like a great many things in life, can be anything from the equivalent to finding a long-hidden secret compartment in an impossibly complex desk full of nooks and crannies, to propositions so blunt and… Continue Reading →

Kurokuma – Of Amber and Sand (S/R)

It’s always nice exploring new music in the process of writing reviews for a site like Ave Noctum, but in my experience, it’s even more fun when said new music comes from a band you’ve been meaning to check out… Continue Reading →

Königreichssaal – Psalmen’o’delirium (Godz Ov War)

The (many) wolves of madness howl, a mournful little melody wafts over the top, and then – somewhat abruptly – chaos ensues. Rocketing straight to the top of my mental list of “I don’t know what I was expecting, but… Continue Reading →

Harvestman – Triptych Part Two (Neurot Recordings)

Earlier in the year, I wasn’t quite quick enough off the mark when Harvestman – Triptych Part One cropped up on the weekly email, and even if I really only wanted it because of the wildly out of place list… Continue Reading →

Steinras – Steinras (Soulseller Records)

How can a band be both so old as to be intensely familiar, but also on their debut album? That is the question that immediately leaps out at me from Steinras’ first, self-titled offering. Because while this might be Steinras’… Continue Reading →

Alcest – Les Chants de l’Aurore (Nuclear Blast)

One of the best things about writing reviews as a paid up obsessive metalhead – and potentially one of the most overwhelming – is not just getting to write snarky screeds about all manner of metal albums, it’s that beautiful… Continue Reading →

SIG:AR:TYR – Citadel of Stars (Hammerheart Records)

Three things that rarely – if ever – fail to at least pique my interest when it comes to music are, in now particular order: cool band name, cool concept, and cool album names. These weaknesses are how I originally… Continue Reading →

Kati Ran – SÁLA (Svart)

Every so often, one of the many albums I get sent to review presents me with a challenge. Sometimes it’s an expected challenge, like how do I categorise this particular example of genre roulette accurately enough to review it, and… Continue Reading →
