I've been a metal fan since before I can remember anything else, more or less. My dad was always playing Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and AC/DC, so you can probably blame whatever crap score I have just awarded your terrible demo band indirectly to him. I spent my teenage years obsessing about thrash metal, before obsessing about all metal from that point onwards until now. I started reviewing music when Doug McClure was still trying to find the Land That Time Forgot, and in that time I have single handedly listened to every album ever released from Russia and the Baltic States. I live in a rural idyll, and so I don't get to gigs all that often, and thus you can always find me at Bloodstock clutching a flagon of rot-gut cider and smelling like a recently exhumed corpse, making the most of seeing a) other metal fans and b) metal bands. I once got poked in the eye by Lee Dorrian, and Fast Eddie Clarke told me he was still great. I also pulled Lesley Crowther's hair; The rest is just rumour.

Wytch Hazel – Prelude (Bad Omen)

Ah, a bit of proper retro-inspired hard-rock/ heavy metal excellence here, coming all the way from…erm…Lancaster. Still, the four piece have been busy, formed in 2011, and this, their first full length release following a fair few EP’s and split… Continue Reading →

Interment – Scent of the Buried (Pulverised)

In fairness, given that they’ve been about since 1991, you’d probably expect Interment to know what they’re doing when it comes to properly Swedish old school death metal.Turns out that they really do know what they’re doing alright, and that… Continue Reading →

Endarker – Among the Shadows (Ihate)

Those plucky chaps over at the splendid Ihate Records camp have been raiding the archives again, this time bringing us the complete collection of music put out by the band Endarker. “Who are they?” you may well ask. A fair… Continue Reading →

King Goat – Conduit (S/R)

King Goat? I’d heard a bit about these chaps from Brighton on Social Media, where they had been getting some rave reviews of late, and so when thee Editor placed this platter up for grabs, I thought I would see… Continue Reading →

Illusions Dead – Celestial Decadence (S/R)

Chaps, you almost lost me. To explain why Illusions Dead – a four piece from Finland, producing extreme blackened-death metal almost had me turned off completely, I have to tell you a story. Some *ahem* twenty-five years ago, my tape… Continue Reading →

Vredehammer – Violator (Indie)

Stop. Vredehammer time. I was going to try and resist it, but sometimes a mental impulse is too damned strong to resist. Now, I don’t know about you, but I had no idea what a “Vrede” was, but thanks to… Continue Reading →

Rotten Sound – Abuse to Suffer (Season of Mist)

At what stage does a band become an “institution”? I mean that word in the sense that a band becomes semi-legendary, and a real cornerstone in the genre or sub-genre that they inhabit? These Finns have been about since 1993,… Continue Reading →

Miasmal – Tides of Omniscience (Century Media)

This is the first time I’ve caught up with Miasmal since their 2011 album, “Miasmal”, which I recall being pretty impressed with at the time. Since that time, the Swedish four-piece has released a split with fellow death / thrash… Continue Reading →

Temple of Gnosis – De Secretis Naturae Alchymica (ATMF)

Well, this is very different to my expectations. As long time readers will know, the Editor of this august publication lets humble reviewers, such as yours truly, select their preferred albums from brief descriptions which are delivered by virtue of… Continue Reading →

The Wolves of Avalon – Across Corpses Grey (Godreah)

Look, there’s not going to be any hiding this from you, so we’ll just as well get it out into the open now. “Across Corpses Grey” is a three track release, with a couple of cover versions (of Nokturnal Mortum,… Continue Reading →

Ereb Altor – Blut Ilt Traut (Cyclone Empire)

I’ve been a fan of Ereb Altor ever since I reviewed their first album, “By Honour” all the way back in 2008 (Christ, am I that  old?). Mats and Ragnar of Ereb Altor are also in the supremely excellent band… Continue Reading →

Destroyer 666 – Wildfire (Season of Mist)

Crikey, was it really 2009 since the last Destroyer 666 album? It seems much more recent than that, and yet here we are again with the fifth full length album from the Australian metal crew. The band relocated to Europe… Continue Reading →
