I've been a metal fan since before I can remember anything else, more or less. My dad was always playing Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and AC/DC, so you can probably blame whatever crap score I have just awarded your terrible demo band indirectly to him. I spent my teenage years obsessing about thrash metal, before obsessing about all metal from that point onwards until now. I started reviewing music when Doug McClure was still trying to find the Land That Time Forgot, and in that time I have single handedly listened to every album ever released from Russia and the Baltic States. I live in a rural idyll, and so I don't get to gigs all that often, and thus you can always find me at Bloodstock clutching a flagon of rot-gut cider and smelling like a recently exhumed corpse, making the most of seeing a) other metal fans and b) metal bands. I once got poked in the eye by Lee Dorrian, and Fast Eddie Clarke told me he was still great. I also pulled Lesley Crowther's hair; The rest is just rumour.

Wolvhammer – The Monuments of Ash and Bone (Blood Music)

So, my first time out listening to Wolvhammer, though a cursory mooch about on the internet tells me that they’re well established in the US, boasting members or ex-members of acts such as Abigail Williams, Skeletonwitch, Nachtmystium and Krieg. This… Continue Reading →

Black Cyclone – Death Is King (Gates of Hell Records)

There was a time in the history of heavy metal, where it was hard to know just where exactly NWOBHM ended, and thrash begun. In fact, arguably before the term “thrash” metal was even in very regular parlance, the “speed… Continue Reading →

Napalm Death – Coded Smears and Other Uncommon Slurs (Century Media)

Look, let’s not waste anyone’s time here: you all know who Napalm Death are, and if – by any chance you don’t, well, then there’s frankly no hope for you by now. To say Napalm Death are an institution is… Continue Reading →

Memoriam – The Silent Vigil (Nuclear Blast)

It was quite a thing for Memoriam, comprised of course of members and ex-members of British Death Metal royalty, Bolt Thrower and Benediction, to have produced their excellent debut album, “For the Fallen” back in 2017, less than a year… Continue Reading →

The Crown – Cobra Speed Venom (Metal Blade)

They’ve been going for twenty seven years now? How can this be true? Yet, somehow, and improbably, The Crown are back again. Their travails and tribulations have been well covered, but simply put, they’ve seen their band forced into changing… Continue Reading →

Iron Reagan / Gatecreeper – Split (Relapse Records)

I think I must have been quick off the blocks to get a hold of this from Thee Ed, as I know that both Iron Reagan and Gatecreeper are some of the most hotly regarded bands of the last couple… Continue Reading →

Crucifyre – Post Vulcanic Black (Pulverised Records)

The Stockholm old-schoolers return with this, their third album, following from their last release, “Black Magic Fire” back in 2014. I have “Black Magic Fire” in my own personal collection, and while I remember enjoying it, I wasn’t completely blown… Continue Reading →

Rotting Kingdom – S/T (Godz Ov War)

A bit of a quicky for y’all with this one, a three track EP from Kentucky’s Rotting Kingdom. Actually, I say “quicky”, but with the shortest of these tracks being six minutes long, and the other two weighing in at… Continue Reading →

Phil Campbell and the Bastard Sons – The Age of Absurdity (Nuclear Blast)

As an upfront and centre disclaimer, I’m a HUGE fan of Phil Campbell. I know that for a lot of people, the trio of Fast Eddie, Philthy and Lemmy were their definitive Motorhead, but I really rather prefer the final… Continue Reading →

Under the Church – Supernatural Punishment (Pulverised)

A second album so quickly? Well, maybe not actually quickly, given that their last record, the rather fun “Rabid Armageddon” came out in 2015. Still, I guess time does seem to work rather speedily when spent in the company of… Continue Reading →

Doom Side of the Moon – Self Titled (Mascot)

Oh boy, I asked for this one. No, literally, I did. You see, Thee Editor had posted a discussion on it, and I happened to mention that having heard it over on Youtube, I thought that this was better than… Continue Reading →

The Wakedead Gathering / Ecferus – Split (I, Voidhanger)

A relatively short release, this, being as it is a four track EP coming from those lovers of all things eclectic, I, Voidhanger records. In fairness, both acts are one-man outfits. Featured here is the dark and wilfully obscure death… Continue Reading →
