I've been a metal fan since before I can remember anything else, more or less. My dad was always playing Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden and AC/DC, so you can probably blame whatever crap score I have just awarded your terrible demo band indirectly to him. I spent my teenage years obsessing about thrash metal, before obsessing about all metal from that point onwards until now. I started reviewing music when Doug McClure was still trying to find the Land That Time Forgot, and in that time I have single handedly listened to every album ever released from Russia and the Baltic States. I live in a rural idyll, and so I don't get to gigs all that often, and thus you can always find me at Bloodstock clutching a flagon of rot-gut cider and smelling like a recently exhumed corpse, making the most of seeing a) other metal fans and b) metal bands. I once got poked in the eye by Lee Dorrian, and Fast Eddie Clarke told me he was still great. I also pulled Lesley Crowther's hair; The rest is just rumour.

Dead Witches – The Final Exorcism (Heavy Psych Sounds)

I hadn’t caught the debut album of Dead Witches, which is a bit of an oversight for me, given that I’ve been a fan of Mark Greening’s other projects, such as the obligatory Electric Wizard, Ramesses and With The Dead…. Continue Reading →

The Sabbathian – Latum Alterum (Svart Records)

So, hands up class, what kind of metal might we be dealing with when the band is called “The Sabbathian” ? Doom metal? Correct-a-mundo, albeit probably not quite in the vein that you’d be expecting. There are no Iommi-rip-off riffing… Continue Reading →

Silent Stream of Godless Elegy – Smutnice (Redblack )

I’ve got a long history with Silent Stream of Godless Elegy, having first come across a single MP3 of theirs from a now long-defunct music trial site, (it was perfectly legit!), and was blown away by how great they were…. Continue Reading →

JT Ripper – Gathering of the Insane (I Hate)

Well, this worked out a little different than I thought it might. Looking at the initial promo blurb, which talked about a German power trio taking an old school approach to heavy metal, I thought I’d be listening to something… Continue Reading →

Black Oath – Behold the Abyss (High Roller Records)

When I saw the blurb for this in the pile at Ave Noctum towers, (a huge obsidian castle, forever shrouded in fog and under perpetual moonlight – just outside Tooting Bec), I knew that I had to give it a… Continue Reading →

Deceased – Ghostly White (Hells Headbangers)

Deceased have been plying their morbid trade on official releases since way back in 1991. It’s been a long, long time since their last full length album, the excellent “Surreal Overdose” back in 2011, but I suspect not even death… Continue Reading →

Evil Scarecrow – Chapter IV: Antartarctica (Dead Box Records)

Look, I know not everyone is a fan of Evil Scarecrow. For the record, I enjoy their stuff. I’m not averse to the odd bit of comedy metal; hell, I own several Manowar albums. I know that several readers will… Continue Reading →

Arroganz – Erzketer (FDA Records)

A bit of a short one for you this time. Arroganz, the German trio, released their “Primitiv” album back in 2017, which I awarded then an 8/10, saying at the time, “…this has the superficial sound of a band that’s… Continue Reading →

Ravens Creed – Get Killed or Die Trying (Xtreem Music)

Well, I had to do a bit of a double take on the title of this one, as it reminded me almost immediately of The Rotted’s “Get Dead or Die Trying” from way back in 2008, but as you can… Continue Reading →

Wytch Hazel – II: Sojourn (Bad Omen Records)

Well, Wytch Hazel produced my album of the year in “Prelude” back in 2016, and it has remained in heavy rotation in my music list ever since. That album was a heady, smoky and somewhat charmingly naive piece of folk-ish… Continue Reading →

Down Among The Dead Men – …And You Will Obey Me (Transcending Obscurity)

Whovians may know that the album title for this monster is also the name of a Big Finish audio production of a Dr Who tale involving one of Sci-Fi’s best villains, The Master. There have been a lot of incarnations… Continue Reading →

Besvarjelsen – Vallmo (Suicide Records)

Something a bit different this time. Besvarjelsen (“conjuring”, in Swedish, language fans) are a Swedish doom band, featuring luscious female vocals, and a vibe so warm and relaxed it’s like sipping a quality whiskey by an open fire during the… Continue Reading →
