I guess I got into Metal by accident at 7 years old when I was given my brother's old record player with ONE record. His mates had told him that Black Sabbath sounded just like Status Quo...he didn't agree so Black Sabbath's debut was that one record. I never looked back. Got a battered old 4 piece drumkit when I was Ten years old and by 14 I had vowed to make my fortune as a Rock Star.
The next fifteen years included a few years as the drummer in Holosade, plus stints in Company Of Wolves, Dominion, Diamond Dogs and Intense, eventually dispelling that ambition, so I ended up running a specialist Metal CD/Record/T-Shirt shop in York for 7 years. £40 grand a year in rent for a shop in York means I am now solely an online trader...
I still turn up every now and again playing drums, bass or guitar in the odd band, be it live or in the studio, because once you have been a musician...or a drummer...it's difficult to stop that creative urge.
When I write a review I remember what it was like to read a review of something I had been a creative part of. My opinion is just my opinion, and I try to be constructive. I believe that if a musician has taken the time to record his or her ideas then it has merit to someone and deserves respect. Music is all about personal taste, and if someone has taken the time to create it, the least I can do is take the time to listen.

My Refuge – Living In Anger (SR)

My Refuge are an Italian Metal band (there’s no dragon on the cover so they aren’t stereotypically power metal) with a shiny new four track EP to unleash on the world. And it’s very professionally done in all aspects –… Continue Reading →

Ring Of Fire – Battle Of Leningrad (Frontiers)

Whatever genre tag you want to give them (Neo-classical Symphonic Melodic Progressive Power Metal was one I particularly liked…), you can’t argue with the talent in the ranks of Ring Of Fire; Tony MacAlpine – Guitars – Planet X, Seven… Continue Reading →

Broken Fate – Rising To The Dream (SR)

What a great production for an unsigned band! Switzerland’s Broken Fate are still without a deal despite releasing high standard demos for a few years now, but I reckon this is a good move – put out a mini album… Continue Reading →

The Vintage Caravan – Voyage (Nuclear Blast)

There is only one depressing thing about this 3 piece Icelandic band’s second release. The band appear so young that it looks like if you added their ages together they would still be younger than me – and I’m 20… Continue Reading →

Silent Force – Rising From Ashes (AFM)

I reckon Alex Beyrodt has now got all his bases covered. As guitarist for Voodoo Circle and Sinner he has Melodic Hard Rock and Traditional Heavy Metal covered respectively, straight ahead Power Metal handled with Primal Fear, so by resurrecting… Continue Reading →

Another Destiny Project – Metodo Paranoico-Critico (SR)

Multi-instrumentalist Peter Pahor’s musical vision in very commendable indeed. He wants his project (that’s Another Destiny Project to you and me…) to be free in every sense. Free from boundaries, industry interference, greed, vanity, commerce – totally, and genuinely free…. Continue Reading →

Dragonhammer – The X Experiment (My Kingdom)

Italian Power Metal and Dragons. It’s almost a given isn’t it? Dragon-this, Dragon-that…so what do we have here? Dragonhammer eh? A Dragon with a penchant for woodwork maybe? OK, safety goggles at the ready, let’s see if I can hit… Continue Reading →

Black Messiah – Heimweh (AFM)

Unless my one school-year of German fails me, “Heimweh” means Homesickness. Or maybe Nostalgia…actually, I’m sorry, it did fail me – I Googled it like everyone else will! No surprise though – in a whole year of study, all I… Continue Reading →

Human Fortress – Raided Land (AFM)

Sometimes it’s hard to really quantify how much a band can really screw things up for themselves…and sometimes they just make it really easy! Five years ago Human Fortress – a German Power Metal band with a decent following, released… Continue Reading →

Glittertind – Djevelsvart (Indie)

I find that one of the interesting things about the whole “Folk Metal” genre (and sub-genres thereof) is that each band has a slightly different take on it than their fellow acts. It’s a genre that you would think is… Continue Reading →

Rhapsody Of Fire – Dark Wings Of Steel (AFM)

That’s a bloody dragon isn’t it? Right there on the front cover! They just can’t resist it can they – they’re obsessed! I had to look twice though, making it grey and almost spectre-like has disguised it a little (I… Continue Reading →

Cronian – Erathems (Season Of Mist)

Cronian is of course the experimental side-project of Borknagar’s Øystein G. Brun and Vintersorg – but then I’m sure you already knew that. Borknagar have had many Extreme Metal guises over the years and they aren’t too tardy with the… Continue Reading →
