I guess I got into Metal by accident at 7 years old when I was given my brother's old record player with ONE record. His mates had told him that Black Sabbath sounded just like Status Quo...he didn't agree so Black Sabbath's debut was that one record. I never looked back. Got a battered old 4 piece drumkit when I was Ten years old and by 14 I had vowed to make my fortune as a Rock Star.
The next fifteen years included a few years as the drummer in Holosade, plus stints in Company Of Wolves, Dominion, Diamond Dogs and Intense, eventually dispelling that ambition, so I ended up running a specialist Metal CD/Record/T-Shirt shop in York for 7 years. £40 grand a year in rent for a shop in York means I am now solely an online trader...
I still turn up every now and again playing drums, bass or guitar in the odd band, be it live or in the studio, because once you have been a musician...or a drummer...it's difficult to stop that creative urge.
When I write a review I remember what it was like to read a review of something I had been a creative part of. My opinion is just my opinion, and I try to be constructive. I believe that if a musician has taken the time to record his or her ideas then it has merit to someone and deserves respect. Music is all about personal taste, and if someone has taken the time to create it, the least I can do is take the time to listen.

Scarleth – The Silver Lining (The Leaders Records)

I have a feeling the “tags” at the bottom of this review might end up being longer than the review itself! That’s basically because Ukrainian Metallers Scarleth have it all going on, and just when you think you have them… Continue Reading →

Phantasma – Deviant Hearts (Napalm)

Feel free to scroll to the bottom of the page, it’s fine I don’t mind, but there, near the end will be the name of this reviewer that will confirm immediately that this is not the new release from the… Continue Reading →

Manimal – Trapped In The Shadows (AFM)

I admit I was worried about this one. I’d never heard the band before and…well…Manimal – not the greatest name is it? Though granted Helloween seems pretty daft in hindsight so undeterred I accessed the press pack that the record… Continue Reading →

Vanden Plas – Chronicles of the Immortals – Netherworld II (Frontiers)

It’s strange how things happen. As you probably know, here at Ave Noctum we all do an album of the year list, and to remind myself of formatting I was just refreshing my memory looking at the one I did… Continue Reading →

Avatarium – The Girl With The Raven Mask (Nuclear Blast)

It’s the second full-length outing for Swedish Dark/Doom/Heavy Metallers Avatarium, the band that features guitarist Marcus Jidell (ex-Evergrey, ex-Royal Hunt, The Ring etc.), his missus Jennie-Ann Smith doing a sterling job on Vocals, bassist Lief Edling (Mr. Candlemass etc.), Carl… Continue Reading →

Koen Herfst – Back To Balance (Not To Do Records)

A solo album by Dew Scented’s drummer Koen Herfst – a solo album by a Metal Drummer! Yes indeed – Prepare yourselves readers for a review full of Flams and Paradiddles (or indeed standard Diddles!). We can analyse Rim Shots,… Continue Reading →

My Refuge – A Matter Of Supremacy (Bakerteam Records)

My Refuge have a record deal and an album out! After favourably reviewing their self-financed EP in 2013 it appears sanity has prevailed and someone has signed them up for their debut full length album…and here it is! Largely based… Continue Reading →

Hanging Garden – Blackout Whiteout (Lifeforce)

Finland. Dark, brooding, cold, moody, grey, a little oppressive and a bit gloomy. I’m talking about their more popular brand of Metal of course – I’m sure the country is lovely – but like their Scandinavian brothers, the Finns do… Continue Reading →

Graveyard – Innocence and Decadence (Nuclear Blast)

Graveyard have their own distinctive sound. If you search for ‘sound like Graveyard’ on internet radio sites or suchlike you get plenty of bands, but none of them really capture that retro Blues Rock style quite like Graveyard. It’s been… Continue Reading →

Horisont – Odyssey (Rise Above)

Horisont go Prog! OK, it’s not a sonic U-Turn or anything, just a natural progression (pun intended) of their existing style, but here on “Odyssey”, Prog Rock is definitely in evidence from the start in it’s keyboard sprinkled, dual guitar-throwing,… Continue Reading →

Carousel – 2113 (Tee Pee)

If you are in a current original band, but with a sound from a past era, you can elaborate your own sound with anything that has influenced you, see what comes out, and then leave it to reviewers to pinpoint… Continue Reading →

Tad Morose – St Demonius (Despotz)

It was their name that got me interested in Tad Morose back in the Nineties. We were all still using the word ‘tad’ a lot at that time, like “I’m a tad tired today” or “it’s a tad windy out… Continue Reading →
