I’ve been obsessive about music since the late 60s and early 70s when during my childhood in Grimsby I used to watch Top of the Pops and bought 7” singles after saving up my pocket money. I really switched to metal when I first heard Dimmu Borgir. The ambience intrigued me, and through magazines and concerts I discovered new territory in the late 90s. For preference I now listen to black metal, heavy progressive music, Scandinavian-style melodic metal and any style which has an edge, or is downright unusual or bizarre. I managed the band Devillish Impressions, which was an exciting time as we had an album but no label or distribution method. We got the label and a European tour with Aeternus, and as the promoter’s plane was delayed, I finished up setting up the band’s first concert in Hamburg on 28th November 2006. I wrote for a while for Live 4 Metal but switched to Metal Team UK in 2007. Like any real music lover, I enjoy going to concerts and meeting people with the same interest and commitment.

In My Embrace – Dead to Dust Descends (Sliptrick Records)

In My Embrace sounds like the name of a doom band to me, but in fact it’s a two man black metal project from Sweden. This seven track EP is quite a mixed bag. They’re all dark, of course, but… Continue Reading →

Emrevoid – Riverso (Drown Within)

This EP is the follow up to a self-titled album in 2011, but looking into it there’s a bit of history with these Italians, who seem to have forsaken their black metal roots and moved on to something more akin… Continue Reading →

Manes – Be All End All (Debemur Morti)

Manes undoubtedly come from the Norwegian planet, inhabited by Atrox, Green Carnation, Audrey Horne and others, where life is seen from an odd and oblique angle. My only previous exposure to this band, who have now released four albums and… Continue Reading →

Dying Vision – Univerself (S/R)

Dying Vision is a group of musicians from Poland. Now there are many excellent musicians from Poland where there seems to be a blackened death factory producing such people, but two members of this band were of particular interest. First… Continue Reading →

Sick of It All – Last Act of Defiance (Century Media)

It’s a case of following the formula: hardcore aggression, punk-like speed, the gang choruses, anthemic and pointed songs. I like it. There’s social commentary, rage and the distinct sense of being pissed off but that’s New York Hardcore. No time’s… Continue Reading →

Oberon – Dream Awakening (Prophecy)

It’s a bit of a cop out on my part maybe, but the description that accompanies this eleven track journey captures the experience. “Dream Awakening” is presented as a “diverse and imaginative music landscape with contrasting emotions musical symbolism, blending… Continue Reading →

Sawlegen – Stories from an Old Empire (Haarbn)

This album was composed and released in 2007, and here it is again. The calm ambience which opens up “Stories from an Old Empire” and the two acoustic cover tracks of Sawlegen’s own songs at the end give the album… Continue Reading →

Genius Ultor – Nic Co Boskie Nie Jest Mi Obce (Arachnophobia)

This, Genius Ultor’s second album, was recorded in a mouldy pre-war house, reeking of “complete humiliation and degradation”. The band then added their contribution of “necrophobic atmosphere and paranoid unease”. This seems to be natural territory for Polish blackened death… Continue Reading →

Towers of Flesh – Antithetical Conjuration (Candlelight)

The title of this album suggested that there was sophisticated intrigue or it was too clever for its own good. I missed the band’s first work, “The Perpetual Paradox”, so the only clues were going to be in the listening…. Continue Reading →

Dark Fortress – Venereal Dawn (Century Media)

Here’s the seventh album from this particular German school of creeping black death. “The musical expression of emotional abysses” is the way they describe it. “Venereal Dawn” centres on the theme of living light but in a way that spawns… Continue Reading →

Zeit – S/T (S/R)

You don’t need much time for this two-track blast from Zeit. Five minutes will do it. Zeit are from Italy and arose from the ashes of As The Sun who released a very good and lively album called “Event Horizon”… Continue Reading →
