I’ve been obsessive about music since the late 60s and early 70s when during my childhood in Grimsby I used to watch Top of the Pops and bought 7” singles after saving up my pocket money. I really switched to metal when I first heard Dimmu Borgir. The ambience intrigued me, and through magazines and concerts I discovered new territory in the late 90s. For preference I now listen to black metal, heavy progressive music, Scandinavian-style melodic metal and any style which has an edge, or is downright unusual or bizarre. I managed the band Devillish Impressions, which was an exciting time as we had an album but no label or distribution method. We got the label and a European tour with Aeternus, and as the promoter’s plane was delayed, I finished up setting up the band’s first concert in Hamburg on 28th November 2006. I wrote for a while for Live 4 Metal but switched to Metal Team UK in 2007. Like any real music lover, I enjoy going to concerts and meeting people with the same interest and commitment.

Dreamwalkers Inc – First Re-draft (Layered Reality Productions)

I don’t think Tom de Wit, the inspiration behind Dreamwalkers Inc, is capable of creating anything less than substantial. “First Re-draft” is no exception. This is a very thoughtful person, who lives and breathes prog and the emotional waves that… Continue Reading →

Aenimus – Dreamcatcher (Nuclear Blast)

Bay Area metal bands conjure up a certain image. Bands like Death Angel and more recently Fallujah come to mind. What I heard of Aenimus’s second album release “Dreamcatcher” is more akin to Fallujah in its technicality and progressive edge…. Continue Reading →

Werian – Animist (Eisenwald)

Whistling winds, chasmic echoes and moody melancholy are always good. To be fair, there’s a lot more than this in this carefully crafted epic journey from Werian, an old German word that has to do with werewolves, shamanism and the… Continue Reading →

Volcano – The Island (Tee Pee)

This mini album is the work of San Diego based psychedelic band Volcano. With psychedelia goes colour, and there’s plenty of that here. Even before we’d got through the first track we’d had African rhythms, electric funk and a little… Continue Reading →

Kaleikr – Heart of Lead (Debemur Morti)

Iceland is home to a number of remarkably good bands, and here’s another in Kaleikr. Formed in 2016, this debut album is labelled as “black metal for fans of Opeth and Enslaved”. It’s evident from the beginning that “Heart of… Continue Reading →

ówt krì – Arra (NCTMMRN)

You can’t keep a good man down. It doesn’t seem five minutes since I was listening to “Ximenes”, ówt krì’s void-laden, spiritual, haunting soundscapes. Now there’s this one, “Arra”, a four track, 43 minute album from the deep thinker from… Continue Reading →

Drottnar – Monolith (Endtime Productions)

“Monolith” is Drottnar’s third album release, but this hides the fact that the Norwegians have been together for over 20 years, initially as a death metal band before turning to Viking Black metal and in the last 15 years a… Continue Reading →

Thronum Vrondor – Ichor (The Rebellion) (Pulverised Records)

Ten years on from “Vrondor II: Conducting the Orchestra of Evil” these devotees of black metal from Belgium have released their third album. The opener “A Symbol of Acrimony” is like an icon of black metal. No sludgy, eerie bits… Continue Reading →

Ars Magna Umbrae – Lunar Ascension (I, Voidhanger Records)

One gentleman from Poland is responsible for Ars Magna Umbrae. The follow up to a 2017 EP “Through Lunar Gateways”, “Lunar Ascension” sends us crashing through worlds in a blackly ambient way. To some extent I am reminded of a… Continue Reading →

Swallow the Sun – Lumina Aurea EP + When A Shadow Is Forced Into The Light album (Century Media)

Swallow the Sun’s previous album release “Songs from the North” (2015) was a triple album which captured different atmospheres and shades, cementing the Finnish band’s fine reputation. Based on that one, “When A Shadow is Forced Into The Light” as… Continue Reading →
