Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Stigmata – Rupert Wainwright (Eureka)

I have fond memories of this as it was actually one of the first of those new-fangled DVD’s I remember picking up. No doubt I was late to the game as I didn’t want to let go of those lovely… Continue Reading →

Fvnerals – Wounds (Golden Antenna)

When this one landed I was intrigued enough to pick it up and give it a quick play. Call me easily swayed but there is something about a band that replace their U’s with a V that adds an air… Continue Reading →

Negura Bunget – Zi (Prophecy)

Since they started in 1995 Romanian act Negura Bunget have trodden one hell of a rocky road shedding around 25 members in the process. It’s enough to finish off many an act but sole surviving member Negru isn’t having any… Continue Reading →

The Agonist – Five (Napalm)

Canadian act The Agonist probably don’t want the most memorable thing about them being that they are that band whose singer went and joined Arch Enemy. They were quick to come back with new vocalist Vicky Psarakis installed and delivered… Continue Reading →

Eastern Front – EmpirE (Cacophonous)

I have been following the lead up to Eastern Front’s 3rd campaign quite carefully and it hasn’t exactly been without its shares of drama and casualties. You could even say the Ipswich based blackened war metal crew had found themselves… Continue Reading →

Warhorns Festival – The Venue Selby 16-17/9/16 Day 2

Day 2 Day two of Warhorns dawned and my merry little band were still trying to figure out what the hell Whispered had been all about, but arrived with a pleasant number of others in time to catch first band… Continue Reading →

Ghost – Popestar (Spinefarm)

A cheeky little EP from everyone’s favourite nameless ghouls in conjunction with a string of 41 US dates here. This contains one new track and 4 covers and is certainly a mixed bag of tricks and treats. Ghost have already… Continue Reading →

Warhorns Festival – The Venue Selby 16-17/9/16 Day 1

Day 1  Keeping things pagan, Viking and folky with lashings of doom, death and blackness Warhorns Festival has established itself as a great little event over the last few years moving from York to Selby in the process. It brings… Continue Reading →

Ars Veneficium – The Reign Of The Infernal King (Immortal Frost)

I remembered this lot from their debut EP The Abyss a couple of years back so wondered how the Flemish Filthsters as I had termed them had progressed. It would seem the Belgium mob have been fairly busy since it… Continue Reading →

New Model Army – Winter (Attack Attack)

“Winter Is Coming” and I’m sure I’m not the only closet Game Of Thrones fan who has started off a review of New Model Army’s 13th studio album this way. Truth is I had to wait a while for it… Continue Reading →

Anaal Nathrakh, Voices & The Infernal Sea – London Underworld 2/9/16

We want our dive back! Well not really but it’s odd getting used to The Underworld since it’s had its spruce up. New stage, lighting, PA, floor, toilets and everything smells lemon fresh; well some of the punters don’t but… Continue Reading →

Arx Atrata – Spiritus In Terra (S/R)

Debut album Oblivion seemingly came from out of nowhere at the beginning of 2014 and pretty much blew me away. Looking back at the review I had little information to go on at the time as the band were not… Continue Reading →
