Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Nachtzeit – Sagor I Natten (Nordvis)

I was having a good laugh (to myself as nobody else was listening) about the amount of requests coming in to review limited edition teenage kvlt misanthropy demos released around the festive season. I certainly don’t follow any traditional bullshit… Continue Reading →

Mayhem – De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas Alive (S/R)

It’s become increasingly more popular of late for bands to play albums in their entirety live and if it is one with historic importance, why not in my opinion. Fans enjoy it and generally it is a draw that’s enough… Continue Reading →

New Model Army, The Virginmarys and The Hyena Kill – London Forum 15/12/16

The annual New Model Army end of year show at the Forum is always a calendar event not to be missed. However that’s exactly what I did last year going to another gig down the road at The Dome. Good… Continue Reading →

Fright Night – Tom Holland (Eureka)

There was no shortage of non-glittery bloodsuckers pulling in thirsty crowds at the flicks in the 80’s. The likes of Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys, Kathryn Bigelow’s Near Dark and Tony Scott’s The Hunger proved that a fascination with all… Continue Reading →

Mrome – Noetic Collision On The Roof Of Hell (S/R)

Apart from a Bandcamp page there is little in the way of Internet presence about this Polish group but a bit of digging shows that they were formerly known as Kingdom and existed between 1995 and 2002. They never got… Continue Reading →

Marc Heal – The Hum (Armalyte Industries)

Ah Cubanate, remember them well. I still have 1st of the four albums they released Antimatter (1993) knocking around on cassette and caught them live on quite a few occasions. If their music doesn’t stick around particularly in your memory,… Continue Reading →

Eternal Deformity – No Way Out (Temple Of Torturous)

Damn, it’s bad enough going through your mortal days with a boat-race like Joseph Merrick’s but you have to take it with you into the afterlife? Seriously though, if you took a look at this band’s name and thought as… Continue Reading →

Shining, Taake and Slegest – London Underworld 4/12/16

Although not a great idea slating some of our potential readership it has to be said that some so called “extreme music fans” are whiny ass bitches with a massive sense of self-entitlement and tonight just proved this. Firstly it… Continue Reading →

Sarkom – Anti-Cosmic Art (Dark Essence)

It’s been a few years since we last heard from doomsday elitists Sarkom and another battering slice of true Norwegian black metal is highly anticipated from the line-up containing past and present members of So Much For Nothing, Magister Templi,… Continue Reading →

Psychotronic Scents

Wondering what on earth to get the ghoul who has everything this upcoming festering season? Well although we are not one to plug products, our friends at Psychotronic have brewed such a fiendishly clever idea, one that no self-respecting horror… Continue Reading →

Undead – Redemption (S/R)

Taking a look at the artwork and logo of this when I pulled it out the packaging I got an immediate flashback and remembered covering the band on their debut 7” vinyl ‘Blood Enemy’ in 2015. Obviously Undead have a… Continue Reading →

Der Blutharsch And The Infinite Church Of The Leading Hand – Sucht & Ordnung (WKN)

Release number 49 (yes you did read that correctly) from Albin Julius under the (abbreviated for sanity sake) Der Blutharsch moniker. I am a recent inductee into this psychedelic musical cosmos having only joined when numbers 47 & 48 found… Continue Reading →
