Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Grift – Arvet (Nordvis Produktion)

Swedish nature-gazer Erik Gärdefors is the person behind everything we hear in Grift. He has worked with others in bands such as Insult, Orcivus & Arfsynd but has gone it very much alone here following up debut album Syner and… Continue Reading →

The Evil Within – Andrew Getty (Screenbound)

“The young man stepped into the hall of mirrors where he discovered a reflection of himself Even the greatest stars discover themselves in the looking glass.” The shining star in question here is director Andrew Getty of the famous Getty… Continue Reading →

Worselder – Paradigms Lost (S/R)

Groovers in the heart of the 90’s, well that strikes as a pretty good descriptive line to sum up this lot from the Pyrenees Mountain region of France. Just to clarify they play groove metal and it sounds very much… Continue Reading →

Ars Magna Umbrae – Through Lunar Gateways (Hellthrasher)

Ready for a “manifestation of the Chthonic forces of Death and a sonic portal to the Nightside?” Well just as well as that is exactly what we have here courtesy of Ars Magna Umbrae from Poland, the work of D.A… Continue Reading →

Atriarch – Dead As Truth (Relapse)

Once I upgraded my musical reading from Smash Hits to N.M.E, Melody Maker and Sounds I remember well the tag of most miserable band in the world being thrown around a lot. It normally went in the direction of The… Continue Reading →

The Lurking Fear – Out Of The Voiceless Grave (Century Media)

Ah another band carrying the flag for all things Howard Phillip Lovecraft but this is no normal group even if you have never heard of them before but a bunch of Swedish veterans from the death metal scene. Call them… Continue Reading →

False Gods – Reports From Oblivion (S/R)

I had clocked the name of this NY based bunch swirling around the ether of the internet and thought they must be worth checking out considering they are self-released and only have previous EP prior to this one. Also it… Continue Reading →

Pigs Blood – ST (Godz Ov War)

Well call me Carrie and drench me in Pigs Blood! Well don’t actually, as I have been there. Not the telekinetic, wrecking the school prom side of things but the being coated in foul smelling ichor. Whilst I have been… Continue Reading →

Tele s therion – Luzifers Abschied (Minotauro Records)

It has been a while since I last heard from the strange and sinister Tele s therion who are not in any way shape or form to be confused with the operatic, symphonic grandeur of their near namesakes. This is… Continue Reading →

The Medea Project – S/T (S/R)

Not to be confused with the theatrical group for incarcerated women, that’s not to be said that their namesake, The Medea Project as a band, do not show a certain thespian flair. Having been around for some time with many… Continue Reading →

Tau Cross – Pillar Of Fire (Relapse)

I had been waiting this one very impatiently along with tour dates. When the latter came along there were cries of indignation from lots of people as the UK was not included but the band were quick to say sorry… Continue Reading →

Kassad – Faces Turn Away (Hypnotic Dirge)

At last some proper grown up black metal from the UK. No clown-shoes and corpse paint in evidence here and it’s a welcome relief as I seem to have been hearing too much of that sort of stuff lately. It’s… Continue Reading →
