Quickly discovering in formative years that I was never quite going to fit in anywhere, I spent time growing up listening to punk, futurist, goth, industrial, metal and psychedelic sounds ranging from Hawkwind to The Sex Gang Children via Japan through to Crass mangled in with Psychic TV and New Model Army. Catching my first band live by accident; The Poison Girls at a G.L.C. free festival, I never looked back. Musical tastes have developed accordingly and I now spend time writing for both Terrorizer and Dominion magazine as well as co-running www.avenoctum.com and pushing the boundaries of genre definition to mould around my own eclectic tastes. Not having the patience to play any instrument myself, I see my writing, to a certain degree as putting something back into the music I love. If I didn't spend time doing this I would be an alcoholic slumped without hope on the cold streets of London. Instead I can be found pint, camera and notepad in hand covering bands both old and new and will happily accept free cider without

Spectrale – Triangle (Ladlo Productions)

Firstly here the album title is actually a symbol of a triangle so just get that in your head and think about going through that shape in the Play School Window (showing my age here). Secondly, well this album is… Continue Reading →

Kawir – Exilasmos (Iron Bonehead)

Taking us off on a historic and ageless journey the last album from Greek veterans Kawir Father Sun, Mother Moon absolutely blew me away. The hour plus listening experience was one I completely got absorbed by so was more than… Continue Reading →

Fotocrime – Always Night (Golden Antenna)

I have to echo a colleague’s recent review and ponder the question of whether “Goth” is looked on as a musical swear word these days? Take Fotocrime for example. They have no problem admitting it is “Always Night” but there… Continue Reading →

Mutation, Barrabus & Nasty Little Lonely – London Underworld 1/11/17

As I am not making it to Damnation Festival this year this was a bit of a treat to catch Mutation who are playing there along with Barrabus who are doing the pre-show. First however it’s a case of the… Continue Reading →

Forgotten Tomb – We Owe You Nothing (Agonia)

A bit of Winter Depression from Italy’s finest miserablists, although it is fair to say they have gone down a bit more of a hateful route of late. Proving that there is a method to Forgotten Tomb’s madness ‘We Owe… Continue Reading →

Concrete Lung – Fumes (Armalyte)

Time to get crushed by the wheels of industrial and there are not many that run you over quite so nastily. In fact Concrete Lung are likely to get in reverse and go back and forth over your corpse, doing… Continue Reading →

Akercocke, Hecate Enthroned & Kill For Company – London Underworld 28/10/17

Camden seems even madder tonight, for some reason everyone thinks it’s Halloween and needs to be dressed like clowns, evil ones included. There’s a queue outside the fancy dress shop stretching down the street and everywhere is packed. Seeking sanctuary… Continue Reading →

King Dude, The Ruins Of Beverast, (Dolch) & Crom Dubh – London Dome 24/10/17

Firstly mention should be made of German label Ván Records who all the band’s tonight are signed to. They seem to be going from strength to strength and really have their fingers on the pulse. The versatility of the outfits… Continue Reading →

Fleurety – The White Death (Peaceville)

Bloody hell you wait 17 years for a Fleurety album and 2 come along in the space of months. Fair enough ‘Inquietum’ which you can read all about elsewhere on these pages is strictly a compilation featuring 4 singles released… Continue Reading →

Unchained Melody: The Films Of Meiko Kaji – Tom Mes (Arrow)

I am sure I am not alone but after watching the film and all the extras I always read the booklet that goes with them before putting back on the shelf. Not all Blu-Ray companies bother with these but Arrow… Continue Reading →

Process Of Guilt – Black Earth (Bleak Recordings)

A batch of discs turned up and I was immediately drawn towards Process Of Guilt from Portugal having heard of them before and been intrigued about giving them a proper listen as they are described as a mixture of doom,… Continue Reading →

GWAR – Blood Of Gods (Metal Blade)

It can’t have been an easy decision to carry on after the tragic death of Dave Brockie aka Oderus Urungus at all. After all he was the alien in chief behind GWAR since they formed even if Sleazy Martini tried… Continue Reading →
